ABSTRACT

Atikah Syam Fitrah (13070170), Citizens Discrimination toward Scavengers (Case Study: In
Lubuk Lintah Urban Village, Kuranji Subdistrict Padang City), Thesis, Sociology Department of
STKIP PGRI West Sumatra, Padang, 2017. This research was motivated by the treatment of
Lubuk Lintah society which gave different views toward scavenger, It began when some people
judge the work of the scavenger is inferior because it related to garbage. Therefore, many actions
that lead to discrimination against scavengers were appeared. The purpose of this research was
(1) to describe the form of Lubuk Lintah citizen discrimination toward scavengers, (2) to
describe the causative discrimination factors of Lubuk Lintah citizens toward scavengers. The
theory of this research used Structural Functional from Robert K. Merton. This research was a
qualitative research using descriptive data. Data collection methods were: through in-depth
interviews, nonparticipant observation and document studies. Informants in this study amounted
to 18 people. Data analysis conducted with four stages of data collection, data reduction, data
presentation and verification. The results of this research indicated that (1) The form of
discrimination of Lubuk Lintah citizens toward scavengers, a) excommunication, b) scavengers
were prohibited in collecting the garbage. (2) Causative discrimination factors of Lubuk Lintah
citizens toward scavengers, a) social status differences, b) socialization pattern, c) powerlessness
factors of a group for intimidation.
