 Chapter 1
Description

The AR3200 Variable Clamp Force Kit reduces tool pressure during clamping
operations. It allows adjustment and reduction of clamping force in the torque wrench
jaws to eliminate excessive box distortion. Variable force is applied to special drill pipe
with thin wall boxes.

The kit consists of a Control Panel Assembly with integral hydraulics and hook-up
hoses.

Installation

Installation connections
The installation of the Variable Clamp Force Kit consists of mounting the control panel
to the Roughneck frame and connecting hydraulic hoses.

Install the Variable Force Clamp Kit as follows (Figure 1):

1. Attach the control panel to the AR3200 frame using the screws and self locking
nuts as shown in the Variable Clamp Force Kit drawing.

2. Install the clamp pilot connection.

a. Replace existing valve end cap with threaded end cap (P/N 99869) on the B end
of the TW lower clamp solenoid valve.

b. Connect hose assembly (P/N 59044P170103) between the threaded end cap
and port 3 of pilot-to-open check valve CV1 on the control panel.

3. Install the torque pilot connection.

a. Replace existing valve end cap with threaded end cap (P/N 99869) on the A
end of the TW makeup/breakout solenoid.

b. Connect hose assembly (P/N 59044P170081) between the threaded end cap
and port 3 of pilot-to-open check valve CV2 on the control panel.

4. Install the pressure connection.

a. Connect hose assembly (P/N 59046P17N80) between the P port of the PRV
90° D03 interface manifold and ball valve BV1 connection on the control
panel.

5. Install the return connection.

a. Connect hose assembly (P/N 59044P170108) between port X8 on the

manifold and port 2 of CV2 (return) connection on the control panel.

Operation

Clamping force adjustment

Use the following procedures to adjust the clamping force of the torque wrench jaws.
Refer to Figure 1 for the control panel controls.

z When the SOFT CLAMP ball valve is in the ON position, the HYDRAULIC
PRESSURE gauge normally reflects the tool operating pressure of 2,000 or 2,500 psi.
When the torque wrench pilot clamp is active, the circuit is active and the gauge
indication drops to whatever pressure is set by TW BREAK-OUT PRESSURE
ADJUSTMENT valve RV2. When clamped and the torque wrench pilot break is
active, the pressure reading increases by 200 psi.

1. Turn the SOFT CLAMP ball valve to the ON position.

2. Preset the TW BREAK-OUT PRESSURE ADJUSTMENT valve to 200 psi.

This assures slightly greater clamping force in the break-out direction, assuring
adequate clamping force for break out.

3. Manually adjust the TW CLAMP PRESSURE ADJUSTMENT valve (RV1) to a

setting low enough to avoid box distortion and yet high enough to prevent pipe
from slipping when torqued.
