Religious Authority and Symbolic Power of Ulama in the Context of

Political Changes in Madura

Abstract:
The main purpose of this article attempts to examine the relationship between the role of
ulama in Madura as kyai and politician. The first focus of this article is to find out and
explain the role ulama in Madura as a kyai who has religious authority and symbolic power.
Secondly, the aim of this article is to find out and explain the role ulama in Madura as
politician who was elected as a legislative executive by utilizing his religious authority and a
symbol of his power to attract madurese to vote for him. Madurese society is a society that is
very obedient to the ulama. Especially madurese who had studied in the boarding led by kyai.
The question is kyai who has become a politician is still doing his activity as a scholar of
teaching and preaching or not? And whether the political party can influence the voters to
elect that kyai?
Tujuan utama dari penulisan artikel ini adalah berusaha untuk menguji hubungan antara peran
ulama di Madura sebagai Kyai dan politisi. Fokus utama artikel ini adalah untuk menemukan
dan menjelaskan peran ulama sebagai kyai yang mempunyai otoritas dan simbol keagamaan.
Kedua, adalah untuk menjelaskan peran ulama di Madura sebagai politisi yang dipilih oleh
masyarakat Madura baik sebagai anggota dewan maupun kepala daerah.

Pada sisi lain masyarakat Madura adalah masyarakat sangat patuh kepada ulama. Terlebih
lagi masyarakat Madura yang menjadi santri atau mondok kepada kyai tersebut.
Pertanyannya adalah apakah kyai yang menjadi politisi akan tetap menjalankan kewajibannya
untuk mengajar ilmu agama atau tidak? Dan apakah partai politik dapat mempengaruhi para
konstituen untuk memilih kyai tersebut atau tidak?
