Rembrandt’s Social Network

1 February – 19 May 2019

One of the first exhibitions in theme year Rembrandt & The Golden Age is Rembrandt’s Social
Network. In this exhibition, Museum het Rembrandthuis focuses on Rembrandt’s relations and
what role they played in his life and work. In addition to his artistic talents, Rembrandt possessed
strong social skills.

And as a good networker ought to, he deliberately leveraged his social network to move up in the
world both financially and artistically.

You will get to know Rembrandt’s social network through a number of persons, including his
childhood friend Jan Lievens and the art specialist Jan Six. What stands out is how informal his
paintings, drawings and engravings are. Also on display will be work from the master that has
rarely or never been shown in Holland before.

After the exhibition about Rembrandt’s social life, there will be two other exhibitions in the
theme year.

Laboratorium Rembrandt
21 September 2019 – 16 February 2020
How did Rembrandt create his paintings and etchings? And how do we study such things today?
In the fall of 2019, Museum Het Rembrandthuis will be creating a laboratory-like setting in
which new insights into the hand of the master will be revealed. Discover what a drawing must
have looked like in Rembrandt’s era and what others added to the painting later, and throw your
light on the dilemmas of researchers and restoration experts.
