Big names in art

The basis of the museum’s collection started with the eclectic art collection of Dirk Hannema
(1895-1984), the former museum director of Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam.
Nowadays, the collection is extended to include paintings, drawings, prints, sculptures and other
objects by world-renowned Dutch and international artists such as Marc Chagall, Piet Mondrian,
Isaac Israëls, Vincent van Gogh, Lucebert, Paul Citroen, Karel Appel, and Carel Willink.

Stunning locations
Located in two awe-inspiring locations, the Museum de Fundatie’s art collection is not just the
centre of attention, its architecture and surroundings are also sights to behold. The first location
is in Paleis aan de Blijmarkt in Zwolle, an impressive former court building in the neoclassical
style, built between 1838 and 1841. Looming on top of the roof is an elliptically shaped
superstructure called ‘THE EYE’ by architect Eduard Louis de Coninck, which is indeed an eye-
catcher.

Impressive sculpture garden

Just 15 kilometres from Zwolle is the second location of the museum in Kasteel Het Nijenhuis,
an idyllic 17th century castle near the villages of Heino and Wijhe. The castle grounds
showcases one of the largest and most unique sculpture gardens in Holland, offering a cross
section of modern sculpture from the 20th and 21st centuries. With over 75 works of art
including those of Ossip Zadkine, Charlotte van Pallandt, Tom Claassen, Pino Castagna and Igor
Mitoraj, combined with 4.5 hectares of ornamental gardens, lawns and woodlands, the garden is
a must-see for art, history and nature lovers.
