COMPOSITION TS2a WATER CONTENT Scope: ‘This test method covers the procedure for determining the water content of emulsified asphalt by reflux distillation using a water rap. Apparasns ond Manertats: ‘Metal Distillation Pot—-The metal distillation pot {Figure 1(2)] shall be a vertical eylindical vessel, preferably made of copper, having a facod flange atthe top to which the hea is tightly tached by means ofa clamp. The head shall be made of metal, preferably bras of copper, and shall be provided with atubulation 25.4 mm (1 in.) in inside diameter. Glass Distillation Pot—The glass distillation pot [Figure 1(b)] shall bee short-neck, round-bottom flask, made of well-anncaled glass, and having an approximate capacity of S00 ml. Heat Source—The heat source used with the metal dstation pot shall be arng gas bumer of 100-2 (*in,) inside diameter or a elecrie mentle heater. The heat source for the glass lstllation pot shall be either an ordinary gas burner or electric heater. Condenser—The condenser shall be a water-cooled, reflux glass-ube type, having a jacket not less than 400 mo (157% in.) in lengt, with an inner tubo 9.5 to 12.7 mm (eto Msn.) in outside diameter. The end of the condensor shall be ground to an angle of 305° from the vertical axis of (he condenser. ‘Trap-~1he trp shall be made of annesled glass constructed in accordance with Figure 1(e) and ‘graduated in 0.10-m. divisions from Oto 2m. and in 0.20-ml, divisions from 2 to 25 mL. Solvent-~Xylol or ether petroloum distillate conforming to the following distillation requirements ‘98 percent distills between 120 and 250°C (248 andl 482°T), This dstilation shal be conducted in ‘accordance with ASTM D 86, Balance —Conforming to the requirements of M 231, Class Q 2. Sample: ‘Obtain a representative sample of the material as specified in T 40, Note 4—he difficulties in obtaining representative samples for this determination are unusually reat, so the importance of proper sampling cannot he toe strongly emphasized. Procedure ‘Whe the material tobe tested contains 25 percent or less water, place 100+ 0.1 g ofthe sumple in ‘tho distillation pot. When the material contains more than 25 percent water, use a 50+ 0.1-3 ‘sample, Thoroughly mix the sample tobe tested with 200 mL. of solvent by switling, taking proper ‘ere to avoid any loss of material 1S2a T583 RASHTO (©2011 ty te Ameo Asoinion of Ste ighay an Tapio Oi, ‘Ailigh revered.
