This specification covers the details for a detailed “Geotechnical investigation work to be
carried out at the site and submission of a detailed Geotechnical report”. The detailed
geotechnical investigation shall be carried out to provide the designer with sufficiently
accurate information both general and specific about the substrata profile and relevant
soil and rock parameters at site on the basis of which the foundation for various structures
and equipments of the power station can be designed rationally.

a) Such structures would include main power house, Chimney Stack, Cooling Tower,
boiler foundation, turbo generator foundation, foundation for crusher house, and
foundation for vibratory equipments, deep pits, reservoir, pipe supports, and all other
related structures of the power station and all other auxiliary buildings etc.

OR
b) Such structures would include intake water structures, DM plant and all other related
structures of the power plant

The range of load intensities for the minor structures are expected to be between 50
kN/sqm and 100 kN/sqm and the bottom of foundations can be kept at shallow depth
from 1.0 m to 2.0 m below EGL. The range of load intensities from the major structures
are expected to be between 100 kN/sqm and 500 kN/sqm and the bottom of foundations
can be kept at greater depth from 2.0 m to 4.0 m below EGL considering the other
services like cable trenches and cooling water pipe lines etc which will be passing above
top of foundation.

Bore holes shall be drilled at specified locations to obtain information about the sub-soil
profile, its nature, strength and to collect soil samples for strata identification and
conducting laboratory tests. The minimum diameter of the bore hole that is boring shall
be 150 mm and boring shall be carried out in accordance with the provisions of IS: 1892
and as per this specification. Tenderer who do not have boring equipments for 150
mm diameter or more shall not quote. Casing pipe, if used, to be 150mm above bottom
of bore hole at all times. All bore holes shall extend up to the depths shown on the
construction drawings or as directed by the Engineer-In-Charge / Client.

7.1.1 Criteria to determine if rock has been met with:

If the strata with standard penetration test (SPT) ‘N’ value greater than one hundred (100)
with characteristics of rock is met, attempt shall be made to advance boring by chiseling
to a depth of two hundred (200) mm or up to two (2) hours to establish presence of rock,
and after this, rock drilling procedure shall be adopted.

If rock is met with at an earlier depth, continue for a further depth of 1.5m to establish
continuity of rock strata and stop. But, if so specified in the drawing, continue drilling to
the specified depth.

During chiselling rock fragments / rock cores shall be collected. Identification of rock
strata shall be on the basis of visual examination of SPT sample and rock fragments.
After it is established that rock is met with, the borehole shall be advanced further by
drilling in rock cores shall be collected.

SPT shall be performed when core recovery is < 20%. When the bore hole is terminated
in soil strata, an additional standard penetration test shall be carried out at the termination
depth.

7.1.2 Casing pipe

Casing pipe shall be used in the borehole to support its sides when side fall is suspected
to occur inside the borehole. When casing pipe is used, it shall be ensured that its bottom
end is at all times 150 mm above the bottom of the bore hole. In case of cohesion less
soils, the advancement of the casing pipe shall be such that it does not disturb the soil to
be tested or sampled. The casing shall be advanced by slowly turning the casing pipe and
not by driving.

In-situ tests and collection of undisturbed samples (UDS) shall be carried out at regular
intervals and at change of strata or as decided by the Engineer-In-Charge / Client.
Representative disturbed and undisturbed samples shall be preserved for conducting
various tests in the laboratory. Water table in the borehole shall be carefully recorded and
reported. No water / drilling mud shall be added while boring above ground water table.
For cohesion less soil below water table, the water level in the borehole shall all times be
maintained at slightly above the water table.

7.1.4 Bore Hole Cleaning

The bore hole shall be cleaned using suitable tools up to the depth of testing or sampling
ensuring that there is minimum disturbance of soil at the bottom of the bore hole. The
process of jetting through an open tube sampler shall not be permitted. In cohesive soils,
the borehole may be cleaned using a bailer with a flap valve. Gentle circulation of drilling
fluid shall be done when rotary mud circulation boring is adopted.

7.1.5 Types of Boring

The types of Boring permitted are Auger Boring, Shell & Auger Boring, Rotary Mud
Circulation Drilling and Percussion Drilling. On completion of the borehole, the portion
drilled in soil shall be backfilled with sand unless otherwise directed by the Engineer-In-
Charge / Client.

In the absence of casing, the sides of the holes should be stabilized with drilling fluid
consisting of drilling mud. As the formation hardens, rotary drills, using churning bits
may be utilized. In gravelly materials, percussion drilling, with simultaneous advance of
casing is the only easy method of advance. In hard and cemented formation like rock, the
hole is advanced with cutting edges using steel shots, hardened metal bits, tungsten
carbide or diamond bits. In sandy soils, bentonite slurry in the bore hole should be
maintained at a level of 1 to 1.5 m above the level of water table.

Wash boring shall not be adopted for boring. Water jetting shall not be used during
boring.

7.1.5.1 Auger Boring

Auger boring can be adopted in soft to stiff cohesive soils above water table which can
stand unsupported. Augers shall be of helical or posthole type which may be manually
or power operated. Auger may also be used with lining tubes, if required. While boring

care shall be taken to minimize the disturbance to the deposits below the bottom of the
borehole. The cuttings brought up by the auger shall be carefully examined in the field
and the description of all the strata shall be duly recorded in the field bore log as per
IS: 1498. No water shall be used while auger boring.

7.1.5.2 Shell and Auger Boring

Shell and Auger boring can be used in all types of soil except in boulders. The water
level in the bore hole shall always be maintained at or above the ground water level for
cohesion less soil below ground water table. The casing may be used. The use of chisel
bit shall be permitted in hard strata with SPT-N value greater than 100. To extend the
borehole through local obstruction such as old construction, boulders, rocky
formations etc, chisel bits may also be used by attaching to the boring rods. All other
requirements in Auger boring shall apply for this type of boring also.

7.1.5.3 Rotary Boring

Mud-rotary drilling– In this system, boring is effected by the cutting action of a
rotating bit which should be kept in firm contact with the bottom of the hole. The bit is
carried at the end of hollow, jointed drill rods which are rotated by a suitable chuck. A
mud-laden fluid or grout is pumped continuously down the hollow drill rods and the
fluid returns to the surface in the annular space between the rods and the side of the
hole, and so the protective casing may not be generally necessary. In this method,
cores may be obtained by the use coring tools.

a) Simplified mud-boring method – In this method, the boring is advanced by a

cutter fixed to drill rods which are rotating by means of pipe wrench. Bentonite is
pushed simultaneously by a double piston pump. The slurry flowing out of cutter
bottom, mixes up with the cut soil and flows to the bore hole surface, settling tank
and back to the slurry tank. The drilling tool is lowered slowly with the help of
manually operated winch fixed on a tripod. After the boring is advanced up to the
desired depth, pumping of the slurry should be continued for 10 to 15 minutes. In
case gravel and kunkur are encountered, a gravel trap fitted with stays around the
drill rod, a little above the cutter, shall be used. The trap consists of 80 to 100 cm
long hollow cylinder having a conical shape at bottom. Holes of 3 mm diameter
shall also be drilled in the drill rod within the trap as well as in the conical portion
of the trap. During boring, gravel and kunkur rise a little and then settle into the
trap. The broken pieces can subsequently be removed by means of the gravel trap.

7.1.5.4 Percussion Drilling:

This method can be adopted in soil with gravel and boulders when the boring has to be
done at a faster rate. This method consists of breaking of the strata by repeated blows
from a chisel or drilling bit. The debris is bailed out at regular intervals by adding
water at the time of boring into the bore hole.

In soils, the material tends to become disturbed by the action of this method of boring
and for this reason, the sample may not be as reliable as by the shell and auger method.
The bit may be suspended by a cable or rods from a walking beam. Where the boring
is in soil or into soft rocks and provided that a sampler can be driven into them, cores
may be obtained at intervals using suitable tools. This method shall not be adopted
unless otherwise specified or permitted by the Engineer-In-Charge / Client.

7.1.6 Standard Penetration Test (SPT)

7.1.6.1 This test shall be conducted in all types of soil deposits met within the bore hole to
find the variation in the soil stratification by correlating with the number of blows
required for unit penetration of a standard penetrometer. This test shall be conducted at
3m intervals, at every change of strata, at depths wherever undisturbed soil samples
could not be collected and as per the directions of the Engineer-In-Charge / Client. The
starting depth of performing SPT shall be either one (1) m or two and-a- half (2.5) m
depth below ground level. This depth shall be staggered in alternate boreholes. That is,
if SPT performed in the starting Bore Hole is at 1.0 m, the depth of the SPT in the
staggered alternate bore holes in both directions shall be at 2.5m. The depth interval
between the top level of standard penetration test and to that of (next) undisturbed
sampling shall not be less than 1m or at every change in stratum. The specification for
equipments and other accessories, procedure for conducting the test, presentation of test
results and collection of disturbed soil samples etc shall conform to IS: 2131.

7.1.6.2 This Standard Penetration Test (SPT) shall be carried out by driving a standard split
spoon sampler in the borehole by means of a 650 N hammer having a free fall of
0.75m. It shall be ensured that the energy of the falling weight is not reduced by friction
between the drive weight and the guides or between rope and winch drum. The rods to
which the sampler is attached for driving should be straight, tightly coupled and straight
in alignment. For driving the casing, a hammer heavier than 650 N may be used.

7.1.6.3 The entire sampler may sometimes sink under its own weight when very soft sub-soil
stratum is encountered. Under such conditions, it may not be necessary to give any
blow to the split spoon sampler and SPT value should be indicated as zero (0).

7.1.6.4 The sampler shall be driven using the hammer for 450 mm penetration. While driving,
the number of blows for every 150 mm penetration and the penetration for every 50
blows shall be recorded. The first 15 cm of drive may be considered to be seating
drive.

7.1.6.5 The total blows required for the second and third 15 cm (that is the last 300 mm drive)
of penetration shall be termed the penetration resistance N; and this is reported as
uncorrected ‘N’ value.

7.1.6.6 This test shall be discontinued when the blow count is equal to 100 and the penetration
shall be recorded. Refusal shall be considered to be met with when the blow count is
equal to 100. At the location where the test is discontinued, the penetration and the
corresponding number of blows shall be reported.

7.1.6.7 The values of Standard Penetration Test (SPT) after applying necessary correction as
per Cl. 7.1.7 shall also be reported.

7.1.7 Corrections

a) Corrections Due to Overburden - The N value for cohesion less soil shall be

corrected for overburden as per Figure – 1 and Cl. 3.6.1 of IS: 2131 (N’).

b) Corrections Due to Dilatancy - The value obtained from the above shall be

corrected for dilatancy if the stratum consists of fine sand and silt below water

table for values of N’ greater than 15 as per Cl. 3.6.2 of IS: 2131 (N’’).

7.1.8 Sampling

significant change of stratum. Sufficient numbers of samples are to be collected for

immediate testing as well as preservation for about 3 months after submission of final
report. Refer also Clause C) given below regarding collection of samples.

7.1.8.2 Sampling is to cover all ground layers / types encountered in the course of the field
investigation. It shall be ensured that the proposed amount of samples is sufficient to
execute all proposed laboratory tests. If the proposed amount of samples is not
sufficient, the Contractor shall propose an increase of the samples. The change in
number of the samples is to be approved by the Engineer-In-Charge / Client. Also
remember that the total number of samples shall be large enough so that retention
samples will be still available after completion of laboratory testing. Retained samples
shall be preserved for about 3 months after submission of final report.

7.1.9 Sampling Procedure

7.1.9.1 Driving the Casing - Where casing is used, it shall not be driven below the level at
which the test is to be made or soil sample is to be taken. In the case of cohesion less
soils which cannot stand without casing, the advancement of the casing pipe should be
such that it does not disturb the soil to be tested or sampled; the casing shall preferably
be advanced by slowly turning the casing rather than by driving as the vibration caused
by driving may alter the density of such deposits immediately below the bottom of the
borehole.

7.1.9.2 Sufficient number of soil samples shall be collected for reliable estimation of soil
properties. The samples collected shall be either disturbed or undisturbed. Disturbed
soil samples shall be collected for field identification and conducting laboratory tests
such as sieve analysis, index properties, specific gravity, chemical analysis etc.
Undisturbed samples shall be collected to estimate physical, strength and settlement
properties of the soil.

7.1.9.3 All the accessories required for sampling and the method of sampling shall conform to
IS: 2132. All disturbed and undisturbed samples collected in the field shall be classified
at site as per IS: 1498.

7.1.9.4 All the samples shall be identified with date, bore hole or trial pit number, depth of
sampling etc. It is also essential to mark an arrow pointing towards the top surface of

undisturbed soil samples and box samples vertically with the arrow directing upwards.
The tube samples shall be properly trimmed at both ends and suitably sealed with
molten paraffin wax at both ends immediately after extracting the samples from the
bore hole / trial pit / plate load test pit and suitably capped on both sides.

7.1.9.5 When the contractor fails to collect undisturbed soil sample at a specified depth, the
borehole shall be advanced by half-a-metre (0.50m) and shall be performed with a
standard penetration test. The reason for not obtaining the undisturbed soil sample shall
be indicated in the bore log.

7.1.9.6 Precaution shall be taken to ensure that there shall not be any change in moisture
content and disturbance of the soil samples and they shall be placed in a temporary
store at the end of the day's work. All the samples shall be kept over a bed of sand, jute
bags, saw dust etc and covered over the top with similar material. The bed and top
cover shall be kept moist till they are properly packed in wooden boxes. The contractor
shall be responsible for packing and transporting of all the samples from site to the
laboratory within seven days after sampling with proper protection against loss and
damage.

7.1.9.7 All the samples shall be suitably packed in wooden boxes using sand, saw dust etc all
around the samples before transporting to the laboratory for testing.

7.1.10 Relaxation during Sampling

Thin walled sampler shall be used to collect UDS by pushing the tube into the soil.
Driving of sampler shall be resorted to only when it cannot be pushed into the soil. This
shall be done only with the permission of the Engineer-In-Charge / Client and all the
details about the same shall be recorded in the bore logs.

Whenever no undisturbed samples can be extracted, the Contractor shall immediately

inform the Engineer-In-Charge / Client. In such a case payment for boring charges shall
be subject to the Engineer-In-Charge / Client being satisfied that adequate effort has
been made to extract undisturbed samples.

7.1.11 Un-Disturbed Samples (UDS):

The sampling tube shall have a smooth finish on both surfaces and minimum effective
length of 450mm. Undisturbed samples shall be of 100mm diameter and 450mm
length. Samples shall be collected in such a manner that the structure of soil and its
moisture content do not get altered The area ratio of sampling tubes shall be less than
12.5%. However in case of very stiff soils, area ratio up to 20% shall be permitted.

7.1.11.1 Undisturbed Sampling in Cohesive Soil

Undisturbed samples in soft to stiff cohesive soils shall be obtained using a thin walled
sampler. In order to reduce wall friction, suitable precautions such as oiling the surfaces
shall be taken. The bore hole shall be cleaned and the depth of sampling below ground
level shall be noted. The sampler shall then be attached to the bottom of boring rods
and lowered into the borehole. The sampler shall be pushed into the clay layer by hand
or by jacking and soil sample of specified length shall be collected without disturbing
the soil. The distance by which the sampler penetrates into the soil strata shall be
checked. Care shall be taken to ensure that the sampler is not driven too far as this will
compress the soil. The sampler shall be rotated to break the core at bottom of the
sampler and then steadily drawn up.

a) Undisturbed Sampling Using Piston Sampler

Undisturbed samples in very loose saturated sandy & silty soils and very soft clays shall
be obtained by using a piston sampler consisting of a sampling cylinder and piston

system. In soft clays and silty clays with water standing in the casing pipe, piston sampler
shall be used to collect undisturbed samples. During this method of sampling expert
supervision is called for. If an obstruction is met, the sampler shall be withdrawn and
another sample be taken after the obstruction is removed.

7.1.11.2 Undisturbed Sampling in Cohesion less Soil

Undisturbed samples in cohesion less soils shall be obtained as per the procedure given
in IS: 8763. Compressed air sampler shall be used to take the samples of cohesion less
soil below water table. Precautions shall be taken to clean the borehole before
sampling. Thin walled tube samplers of sixty (60) mm internal diameter shall be used.
The height and other dimensions of the sampler shall be recorded before use. Proper
care shall be taken to maintain the water level in the bore hole slightly above the
ground water table before and during sampling operations.

Immediately after the sample is obtained, the ends of the sample are trimmed, shall be
waxed and capped to avoid moisture content changes. They shall be packed in wooden
boxes carefully so that no disturbances take place during Handling / transportation.
They shall be transported to the laboratory within 7 days.

7.1.11.3 Undisturbed Sampling in Cemented Sands

Slow rotary technique using core barrels may be used to obtain undisturbed cores in
cemented sand. If necessary, drilling fluid may be used during advancement for

7.2.2 Drilling in rock shall be done at specified locations or as per the directions of the
Engineer-In-Charge / Client. Before commencing drilling, it shall be proved that
characteristics of rock have been met with as mentioned in Cl. 8.2. The starting depth of
drilling in rock as mentioned in Cl. 8.2.1 and 8.2.2 shall be certified by the Engineer-In-
Charge / Client. For detailed step-by-step rock drilling procedure refer Cl. 9.2

7.2.3 Equipment:

The rotary core drilling equipment and procedure for drilling shall conform to IS: 6926. It
shall be ensured that rock has been met with (by chiseling, as mentioned before) before
starting to drill. By rotary motion using Nx size bit, rock shall be drilled. Tungsten
carbide drill bit shall be used as far as possible. When progress of drilling with tungsten
carbide bit is less than 150mm/hr, Nx sized diamond tipped drill bit or impregnated
diamond bits shall be used depending on the type of rock encountered. To minimise the
erosive action of the drilling fluid on the core and thereby to improve core recovery,
double tube core barrels should be used. The casing and core barrel to be used shall be of
designation BX or NX. The equipment shall have necessary facilities to regulate the
spindle speed, bit pressure and water pressure during core drilling to get a good core
recovery as per Apendix A of IS: 6926.

7.2.4 Core Drilling:

Core drills shall be so designed that in sound rock, continuous recovery of core is
achieved. It is important to ensure that boulders or layers of cemented soils are not
mistaken for bed rock. This necessitates core drilling to a depth of at least 3 m in bed
rock in areas where boulders are known to occur. For shear strength determination, a core
with diameter to height ratio of 1: 1 is required. Rock pieces shall be used for
determination of specific gravity and classification.

7.2.5 Core Recovery

Double tube swivel barrel core barrel of Type B shall be used to maximize core recovery.
Suitable core catchers shall be used to pick up cores from all layers of rock and to ensure
continuous and good core recovery, with least disturbance avoiding shearing of core.

Entire length of cores recovered shall be packed, labeled, and preserved in wooden boxes.
Drill run is normally limited to 750mm. It can be increased to 1.5m when core recovery is
> 80% in two consecutive runs. When core recovery is < 20%, SPT shall be performed.

In zones which are highly fractured or where the barrel continuously becomes blocked, it
is essential that short runs be used even though this means removal of the entire string of
drilling tools every 300 mm. or less.

7.2.6 Drilling Procedure in Rock

Rotary core drilling technique with continuous core recovery should be adopted for
drilling through rock. The behaviour of rock mass is governed more significantly by the
nature of fractures in the rock than by the type and hardness of the material composing
the rock itself. Hence, good drilling technique should be adopted to obtain an intact
sample truly representative of the in-situ material and for achieving highest percentage of
recovery possible.

a) The drilling fluid shall be clean water. Circulation of drilling fluid shall be started
before the core barrel reaches the bottom of the hole to prevent cuttings or sludge
from entering the core barrel at the start of coring. Drilling fluid shall be circulated
continuously down the hollow rods and the sludge conveying the rock cuttings to the
surface shall be collected.

b) When drilling through soft/weathered/fractured rock, water circulation must be

reduced so as to avoid shattering/breaking of core.

c) The rotational speed of the bit (spindle speed), the amount of downward pressure
applied on the bit (bit pressure) and water pressure shall be suitably adjusted and
properly monitored so that the core is collected with least disturbance and to avoid
shearing of the core from its base. Bit speed, bit pressure, water pressure for the type
of bit for various rock types shall be as per Appendix A of IS: 6926.

d) No drill run shall exceed 0.75m in length. This can be increased to1.5m provided the
core recovery observed is more than 80% in two successive 0.75m drill runs and on
approval from the Engineer-In-Charge / Client. If the core recovery is less than 20%,
SPT shall be performed before commencing the next drill run as explained in clause
6.2.

7.3 Trial / Test pit

7.3.1 The method of exploring by open Trial Pits consists of excavating trial pits at the site and
thereby exposing the subsoil surface thoroughly, enabling undisturbed samples to be
taken as per IS: 1892 and IS: 4453. Trial pits shall be of 3m x 3m size so as to permit
easy access for visual examination of walls of the pit and to facilitate sampling and in-
situ testing operations. Pits shall be excavated up to a maximum depth of 4m below
ground level or as per the directions of the Engineer-In-Charge / Client. The pit shall be
secured against accidental fall by providing barriers, protective measures and lighting
necessary for the period the pits remain open as per IS: 3764. Precautions shall be taken
to ensure the stability of pit walls including provision of shoring if necessary as per IS:
4453. Precautions shall be taken to prevent surface water draining into the pit.
Arrangements shall be made for dewatering if the bottom of the pit extends below water
table. Trial pits shall be kept dry and a ladder shall be provided for easy approach to the
bottom of the pit.

7.3.2 In-situ tests such as Vane shear test shall be conducted in strata like clay at the obligatory
depths as specified in Cl. 7.5. Undisturbed samples shall be collected immediately on
reaching the depths at 1m, 2m, and 3m and at the termination depths so as to avoid
substantial changes in moisture content of the subsoil. The best procedure is to obtain
samples from trial pits dug after the ground water has been lowered by means of wells or
sumps with suitable filter linings. The undisturbed samples may be obtained by means of
100mm diameter sampling tubes with a cutting edge. This is done by driving sharp-edged
thin-wall tubes into the ground by gently hammering or pressure. The chunk samples
shall be cut and trimmed to a size of 0.3m x 0.3m x 0.3m. A square area of 0.35m x
0.35m shall be marked at the centre of the levelled surface at the bottom of the pit.
Without disturbing the soil inside the marked area, the soil around this marking shall be
carefully removed up to a depth of 0.35m. The four vertical faces of the soil block
protruding at the centre shall be trimmed slowly so that its size reduces to 0.3m x
0.3m.Wrap the chunk samples with plastic cloth, plastic paper (polythene film) or a
waxed paper painted on the outside with molten wax. Two additional layers of cloth and
wax are required to perfectly seal the sample. The contractor shall be responsible for
packing and transporting of all the samples from site to the laboratory as per Cl. 7.1.9.6.

7.4 The Field Vane Shear Test (FVST)

7.4.1 The Field Vane Shear Test (FVST) shall be carried out as per IS: 4434 in Bore Holes,
Trial Pits or (Cyclic) Plate Load Test pit, The vane shear test is a non-empirical method
of measuring the shear strength of soft clay in-situ at all depths from the surface to at
least 30 m. The vane shear test is most appropriate for the determination of the shear
strength of saturated clays, (‘soft’ to ‘medium’ consistency), and sensitive soils (highly
susceptible to sampling disturbances) at 1.5m intervals depth.

7.4.2 The test consists of inserting a four-blade metal vane of cruciform shape, into the soil,
and rotating it until the soil fails in shear. The vane is rotated at a rate of 6 degrees per
minute. The torque required to rotate the vane is measured. The test is performed rapidly
and therefore measures only the un-drained strength of soils.

7.4.3 The vane shear test shall be conducted in two stages. In the first stage, test shall be
performed in undisturbed soil and in the second stage the test shall be performed on the
remoulded soil as per IS: 4434. The results of the vane shear test shall be submitted with
the computed value for shear strength of soil.

7.4.4 If there is any obstruction at the bottom of borehole or pit that does not permit the
performance of this test, it shall be performed at a depth where obstructions due to the
presence of gravel, sand, shells, decomposed wood and etc cease to occur.

7.4.5 Following records shall be made during the test:

(i) Name of Project
(ii) Bore-hole No. or Pit No., Date, Location, etc.
(iii) Reference elevation or Ground elevation:
(iv) Method of making the hole (Cased or uncased)
(v) Level of water in the bore-hole or Pit
(vi) Level of ground water at the time of test:
(vii) Driving resistance, if observed
(viii) Size of the vane
(ix) Conversion factor of the torque measuring equipment, etc.

7.5 Ground Water Measurements & Samples in Soils and Rocks

a) In permeable soils, the water level in borehole shall be allowed to stabilize after lowering
it adequately by bailing. When water level inside the borehole is found to be stable, the
depth of water level below ground level shall be measured. Stability of sides and bottom
of the borehole shall be ensured at all times.

b) For both permeable and impermeable soils, the following method shall be suitable. The
borehole shall be filled with water and then bailed out to various depths. Observation on
the rise or fall of water level shall be made at each depth. The level at which neither a fall
nor a rise is observed shall be considered as the water table elevation. This shall be
established by three successive readings of water level taken at an interval of two hours.

c) In case any variation in the ground water level is observed in any specific boreholes then
the water level in these bore holes shall be recorded daily during the course of field
investigation. Levels in nearby wells, streams, water courses etc if any shall also be noted
whenever these readings are taken. If there is fluctuation in ground water levels and
pressure, the same shall be reported with daily water level readings to the Engineer-In-
Charge / Client. Wells either at the site or in the vicinity give useful indications of the
ground-water conditions. Flood marks of rivers may indicate former highest water levels.
Tidal fluctuations may be of importance. There is also a possibility of several water
tables at different levels, separated by impermeable strata.

d) On .sites liable to be water-logged in wet weather, it is desirable to determine the

fluctuation of the water table in order to ascertain the directions of the natural drainage,
and to obtain a clue to the design of intercepting drains to prevent the influx of ground
water on to the site from higher ground. The seasonal variation in the level of water table
should also be noted.

e) The minimum and maximum ground-water levels should be obtained from local sources
and wells in the area would also give useful information in this regard. The formation of

perched ground-water tables caused by impervious strata which prevent the water from
seeping down to the main body of ground water is to be studied.

f) Information with regard to water table, elevations at which the drilling water was lost or
elevations at which water under excess pressure was encountered shall be recorded on the
field logs. Water levels before and after putting the casing, where used, shall be
measured. In sands, the level shall be determined as the casing is pulled and then
measured at least 30 minutes after the casing is pulled; in silts, at least 24 hours after the
casing is pulled; in clays, no accurate water level determination is possible unless
pervious seams are present. However, the 24 hours level shall be recorded for clays.
When drilling mud is used and the water level is desired, casing perforated at the lower
end shall be lowered into the borehole and the borehole bailed down. Ground water levels
shall be determined after bailing at time intervals of 30 minutes and 24 hours until all
traces of drilling mud are removed from inside the casing.

7.5.1 Sub-Soil Water Samples

a) Sub-soil water samples shall be collected for carrying out chemical analysis.
Representative samples of ground water shall be collected when it is first encountered in
boreholes before the addition of water to aid boring or drilling. Water samples shall not
be collected when bentonite slurry or mud has been used for drilling operations. For the
purpose of chemical analysis about 5 litres of water should be collected from as near the
bottom of the bore hole or trial pit as possible and not from the top. If water has been
added for drilling purposes or if ground water has been diluted by surface rain water then
the bore hole shall be dewatered and water be allowed to rise from which the sample may
be taken.

b) The sampling apparatus shall be such that the water at the desired depth can be collected
directly without any disturbance and any change in concentration of constituents like

suction end inserted up to the required depth in the borehole shall be used for this
purpose.

supernatural liquid can be poured into a clean well rinsed glass or polythene bottle.
Sufficient quantity and number of samples shall be collected to carry out the chemical
analysis and sent to a laboratory in airtight bottles with proper labelling. Samples of
industrial waste products that have been dumped on the site should be collected and
chemically analyzed in the laboratory as per Cl. X.

7.6 Field California Bearing Ratio (CBR)

7.6.1 Tests to determine Field CBR values (un-soaked and soaked) of existing materials shall
be carried out as per IS: 2720 (Part – 31) at different locations along the proposed road
alignment. The equipments and accessories required for carrying out the test, test
procedure, all test data, all the field observations, charts, curve etc along with calculations
and presentation of results for determination of the in-situ CBR value shall be as per IS:
2720 (Part – 31). At least three (3) in-situ CBR tests shall be carried out at each location.
The Contractor shall get the locations of CBR tests indicated in the drawing confirmed at
the time of execution of the work.

7.6.2 If the results of the three tests in any group do not show reasonable agreement, then three
(3) additional tests shall be performed at the same location and the arithmetic mean of the
six tests shall be reported as the in-situ CBR value at that location. If single value is
erratic for any reason, that value shall be discarded and another test shall be performed.
The spacing of the tests should be such that operations in one area do not disturb the soil
in the other area. For testing operations this spacing shall be minimum 50 cms for the
penetration piston used in the test for no disturbance in the surrounding area.
