2.0 VALVES
2.1 SCOPE
This Basic Practice explains the standard system used to assign code numbers to equipment.
Each valve code number normally consists of two capital letters and an additional 4 to 6 characters.
Valve suppliers/vendors shall supply all valves with metal tags with the appropriate valve code numbers. The
metal tags shall be attached to the valves with metal wires. If a valve is internally coated, the type of coating shall
be identified on the metal tag.
The following is an example of a typical valve code designation:

The valve trim materials and/or service are identified by an alphanumeric character, as shown in the following
table:

1. Hot Oil, Glycol, Amine Lines 48.3 mm and smaller must be socket welded.
2. Hot Oil and glycol lines must have the following flanges on 150 ANSI lines.
This reduces leakage in these sizes when heating and cooling occurs within lines.
3. All butt welded amine lines constructed of carbon steel must be PWHT when hardness of welds > 200 BHN and
process temperature is > 82ºC.
4. All flanges shall be bolted with ASTM A193-B7M stud bolts with ASTM A194-2HM nuts.
6. Piping 48.3 mm and smaller in sour service shall be socket welded and /or flanged where applicable.
8. The line list information takes precedence over any information in the piping specifications.
