Journalism is an activity that helps the pupils to be a good writer.

It provides many opportunities for

them to learn, to show their ability in writing news whether in English or in Filipino. It also adds their
wide learning in vocabulary and promotes their social life in the field of news writing in our society.
Learning journalism is fun and enjoyable and sometimes boring in the since that the writers experienced
a try and error portion in the field of news writing but still the writers continue to work for it in
preparation for the coming contest in the district level. If time will permit the writers, it will be
continued until the division, regional, and even in the national level. This can be happen with the help of
the parents and the teachers. Pongol Elementary School always participate the writing contest in the
district, division level and sometimes in the regional and national level. For school year 2012-2013, Fluer
Kim Caipang won the third place in copy reading and headline writing-Filipino category. Noreen Mitz
Bacatan won the second place in News Writing-English category. The two of them were qualified for the
division level but it is sad to say the two of them did not attended the division level due to
mismanagement of the chairman of journalism and the shortage of the monetary fund. ALMA T.

URDANETA CITY- Thirty three elementary and secondary teachers from private and public schools who
are advisers of school newspapers in this city have undergone a three-day workshop on Campus
Journalism conducted by Mavic Lee’s Tutorial Center last May 25 to 27 at the Library Building of
Urdaneta City National High School (UCNHS).

The workshop aimed to immerse the teachers on the aspects of news writing and broadcasting, both for
radio and television, in preparation of the annual competition of campus journalists during the Press
Schools Conferences from the Division Level up to the national level, an activity sponsored by the
Department of Education (DepEd).

Maria Victoria Mones-Lee, an experienced television production staff of I-Witness, The Price Is Right, At
Iba Pa, etc. in various TV stations who now owned the tutorial center, led the workshop and talked on
the importance of students’ role in the changing world through mass media, television news production
and journalists’ code of ethics.

This writer served as the main facilitator on topics such as news writing, editorial writing, copy reading,
photo journalism, headlining and broadcasting focusing on preparing news radio scripts and radio
newscasts.
The workshop used the experiential approach to learning where the participants were given news
prompters to write followed by short lectures on the topics being discussed.

On photojournalism, the participants were given assignments simulating a news production group
where they took shots of the given subjects.

The participants underwent workshops on news writing for print, radio and television, which afterwards
were critiqued pointing out weaknesses of the outputs.

Virgilio Cuison, school paper adviser of Anonas National High School and president of the Association of
Urdaneta City School Organ Advisers (AUCSOA) said the approach provided by the workshop’s
facilitators was new and gave him more knowledge and skills in campus journalism.

“I have attended seminars on campus journalism before where resource persons talk too much during
their lectures without letting us experience the process involved on the aspects of journalism. Your
approach has given us more insights particularly on the new trends on journalism,” Cuison said. “I am
now more inspired to coach my students.”

Education Program Supervisor Desiree Hidalgo, who graced the closing ceremonies of the seminar, said
the workshop was very timely because the city schools division fared dismally during the Regional
Secondary Press Conference.

“We thanked the facilitators for this opportunity.. With the feedbacks I received from the participants,
this workshop is excellent. You, facilitators have done your best to provide us the necessary skills.
Hopefully, with the new skills the advisers have acquired, Urdaneta City Schools Division will fare well in
the regional competition and up to the national level,”. Hidalgo said.

Nilda S. Ramos of Palina East Elementary School and Leslie Delos Trino of. Camantiles National High
School provided the impression during the closing program of the said workshop.

Both said the workshop has been an eye opener for them to work more on campus journalism.
