environmental hazards, dust and noise

Atlas Copco Drilling Solutions sets the safety,

operator comfort, and ergonomic standards
for the industry with its new 351 cab design.
Large, tinted, safety-glass windows located on
all four sides of the cab give the operator 360-
degree visibility including the ground. Wind-
shield wipers and sun screens are standard for
both drill end and deck end.
The single-piece FOPS cab, isolation mounted
for optimum comfort and stability, is thermally
insulated, heated, pressurized, and sound
rated to 70 dBA. An integrated air system with
directional vents and louvers keeps the cab
comfortable.
The optional air conditioning unit is mounted
underneath the cab rather than on top to avoid Diesel or electric prime movers
problems with leakage. Controls are easily ac- provide power and versatility
cessible and the vents act as defrosters when
needed. The 351 can be configured with either
a diesel or electric prime mover. Diesel
engine selections are Cummins QSK45
or Caterpillar 3512. The Cummins (1500
HP/1,119 kw) and the Caterpillar (1650

A Caterpillar 385 custom undercarriage, the
longest in the industry, provides a low center of
gravity and additional stability when the tower
is raised. The 385 undercarriage exhibits excel-
lent slewing power and counter rotation abil-
ity. Pads and links can be replaced individually
rather than as a unit, allowing the drill to oper-
ate if one pad is damaged or missing.
The 351 propels at 1.0 mph (1.77 km) to quickly
move from hole to hole.
 Aggressive, new technology keeps
man and machine in sync

The electrical control system on the 351 puts diagnostics and

drill operation at the driller’s fingertips. Six Distributed Control
Unit (DCU) computers, located in strategic points on the drill,
network all operating data to the operator’s Central Computer
in the cab.
The engine is tied directly into this network. The Pentium-
based Central Computer, located in the cab, features a color
display with infrared touch screen interface that can be oper-
ated with a gloved hand. Virtual switches operate secondary
functions.
