Eating Disorders
Eating Disorders don’t discriminate against people
of any age, race, or gender, meaning they can affect
anyone. However, school-aged children may be
predisposed to behaviors as they are dealing with
their changing bodies. If these issues are
unresolved, the affected person could die.

Types of Eating Disorders

● Anorexia Nervosa
● Bulimia Nervosa
● Binge-Eating Disorder
● Orthrexia
● OSFED

A study mentioned on NEDA’s Website found...

When researchers followed a group of 496 adolescent girls for 8 years, until they were
20.5.2% of the girls met criteria for DSM5 anorexia, bulimia, or binge eating disorder.
When the researchers included nonspecific eating disorder symptoms, a total of 13.2%
of the girls had suffered from a DSM-5 eating disorder by age 20.

How You Can Help:

● Listen to how your students talk about their health!

- If they mention weight loss, seize the opportunity to create an open discussion
- If they mention diets, provide the students with sound nutritional information and
help them understand misinformation.
- Be attentive! Short comments may be segways into a helpful and informative
conversation.
● Ask questions! Such as:
- Are you concerned about your weight? Do you think your friends are concerned
about your weight? Do you and your friends discuss your weight often?
- Do you know that diets aren’t the optimal way to lose or maintain weight? HAve
you ever dieted? Why?
- Do you know that maintaining a diverse diet of all nutritional value is important?
Do you know that you need fat in your diet, and without it you can develop health
problems?
