THE LIMIT OF A FUNCTION

The number b is called the limit of the function f(x) as x → a (read: "as x …………………….. a") if
as x approaches a ……………………… from the right or the left, the value ……………..……….. f(x)
approaches b ……………………………….. bound. Note that it is assumed that the function f(x) is
defined within some interval containing the point x = a (at all points on the left and on the right of a); at
the point x = a itself, the function f(x) is either defined or is not (the latter case is no less important than
the former).
Definition. The number b is called the limit of the function f(x) as x → a, if the absolute value of the
difference f(x) – b remains less than any preassigned positive number ε every time that the absolute
value of the difference x – a, for x ≠ a, is less than some positive number δ (dependent on ε).
More briefly (but less rigorously): the number b is the limit of the function f(x) as x → a, if the
absolute value of f(x) – b, is arbitrarily ……………..……….. when the absolute value of x – a, is
……………………….. small.

AREA
Another measure of a polygon is area. The area of a polygon tells us how many square units (inches,
feet, yards, meters, centimetres, and so on) that polygon contains.
Suppose we want to put tiles on the floor of a room. Suppose that the room is of a 10 feet by 8 feet,
and the tiles are 1 foot by 1 foot. How many tiles do we need to cover the floor of the room? One way
to do this would be to start laying the tiles down on the floor, placing one next to the other until the
entire floor is covered. Because the tiles measure 1 foot by 1 foot, they are squares, and we can say that
their measure is 1 square foot. Counting the number of tiles we see that there are 80 of them, that is,
there are 80 square feet of tiles on the floor. We can also say that the area of the floor is 80 square feet.
Recall that the area of a polygon tells how many square units of a certain kind that polygon contains.
Note that we could have also obtained the answer 80 square feet by multiplying 10 × 8 = 80. Therefore,
we can conclude that:

The area of a rectangle is equal to the product of its length and width; that is, area of a
rectangle = length × width.
Symbolically, we have
A=l⋅w or A=l⋅w
We can also say that the area of a rectangle is equal to the product of its base and its height. The term
base is another name for the length of a rectangle, and the term height is another name for the width of a
rectangle. Therefore,
A=b⋅h
