GENERAL ARCHITECTURE

OPERATION
The RCU 220 is designed for three-phase reclosers supporting either three-phase or single-phase tripping, adapting to
different distribution feeder architectures.

Single-phase trip by three-phase recloser

Full-featured breaker control with voltage check and optional synchronism check are part of the available function set.
The hit-and-run feature (delayed open/close), select-before-operate, secure hardwired or distributed interlocking and
multi-level control authority sources ensure safe operation of the equipment.
The auto-reclose function supports up to 5 reclose cycles with independently configurable dead times, is ready to
integrate in fuse-saving schemes, and includes a zone sequence coordination feature that enables the coordination with
downstream devices avoiding unnecessary trips by upstream reclosers.

2/12
RCU 220E

The RCU 220 can also operate as a sectionalizer / interrupter controller. The built-in sectionalizer function has the ability
to monitor upstream reclosers or circuit breakers, isolating the affected area during upstream recloser dead time,
counting up to five (5) reclosing cycles before opening. In order to increase selectivity automatic sectionalizing is only
performed after a fault has been detected.

Typical scheme of sectionalizer control application

Several independent stages for main fault detection and protection functions enable versatile device applications, in a
true full-scheme design.
For time-graded coordination, the RCU 220 includes both ANSI/IEC standard curves and traditional recloser curves.
Editable time-current curves are also supported, enabling straightforward coordination with all types of interrupting
devices in the network (including legacy equipment, fuses, reclosers programmed with non-standard curves, etc.).
Eight independent setting groups are available and can be interchanged by user command or logic conditions dependent
on system operation.

The RCU 220 can be easily integrated in radial or loop network configurations and includes a flexible loop section isolation
and feeder restoration function that implements a distributed self-healing algorithm based on time intervals and voltage
levels that does not require communications. Upon reconfiguration RCU 220 units are capable of automatically adapting
the control algorithms to the new network topology through flexible settings.

Typical loop/ring feeder configuration

Given the availability of new generation communication networks the self-healing function can be further enhanced with
peer-to-peer GOOSE messaging, providing high-speed and highly reliable operation at all stages of the detection, isolation
and restoration cycle.
