Sleep
You know that you have had a good night sleep when you awake easily in the
morning. You feel refreshed and ready for the day. You are bright, alert and
energised all the way through the day to bedtime! Good sleep means you get
enough sleep without interruptions from your environment or from internal factors,
for example breathing. You should sleep seven to eight hours. And you should
awake easily in the morning.

Sleep is essential to life

Sleep is not just a waste of time but essential for recovering from the day and
getting ready for the next day. During sleep, our body is repaired and refuelled
with energy. Sleeping is like filling up your car with gas! Sleep is vital to proper
physical and mental development. During sleep growth hormones are released in
the body and the immune system also builds up. So sleep helps us stay healthy!
Sleep also helps us to remember better. When we sleep memories and experiences
we have had during the day are organised in the brain. Good sleep also helps you
to recover those memories and experiences the next day.

How much sleep do you need?

In fact, sleep needs vary. Most healthy adults need seven to nine hours of sleep
per night. Some people can function without sleepiness or drowsiness after six
hours sleep. Others need up ten hours to feel their best. It is a myth that you
need fewer hours sleep the older you get. While sleep patterns change as we age,
the amount of sleep we need generally does not.

Things that can have a negative impact on your sleep

Stress is a natural and positive part of life but it is also the number one sleep
stealer. Stress gives us added mental alertness to meet the challenges of everyday
life. But the worries about tomorrow can cause negative stress and this is what
can raise your body metabolism at bed time, when it should be lowered. A raised
metabolism prevents you from getting the peaceful, uninterrupted sleep that you
need to recover.

Do you have a cup of coffee after dinner? Do you go the gym close to your
bedtime? These could be affecting your sleep! Drinking alcohol, or coffee in the
afternoon and in the evening, are real sleep stealers. Exercising close to bedtime
also makes it more difficult to fall asleep. Not exercising at all is bad for sleep too.
Keep exercising, just not right before bed! Irregular daily routines also affect your
sleep. Working or studying right before bed is a sleep stealer too. Eating too little
or too much is not good for sleep either. Balance is the key.

3
Your bedroom environment also impacts your sleep. Here are
some things to consider regarding the bedroom environment:
• Your partner and other family members can disturb your
sleep. You need a bed that is big enough so that you can
sleep uninterrupted.
• A too cold or a too warm bedroom is not good for sleep.
13°C (55° Fahrenheit) to 20°C (68° Fahrenheit) is ideal.
• A too messy bedroom can make it hard to fall asleep. Most
people prefer a bedroom that is tidy and free of clutter.
• Last but not least, you need a comfortable bed. The right
mattress is important for a good nights sleep! Mattresses that
are too hard or too soft can disturb sleep.

Ergonomics
Sleep ergonomics is about designing solutions that give the
best conditions for a good night’s sleep. Your bed is the most
used piece of furniture in your home. You sleep on average for
one third of your life. What you lie on to do this should do the
best job possible to give you a good night’s sleep!

Sleep ergonomics is very much about getting the correct spine

alignment. To design sleep solutions that are comfy and able to
provide restful sleep we need to learn about people and their
needs. But what do we need to know about people in order to
design the best solutions?

The spine
The spine needs good sleep. It works hard all day
supporting the body. Every time you move your head, arms
and legs it is your spine making it possible. The spine has
24 movable bones. These bones are connected by ligaments
and separated by discs. When lying down, there should be Figure 1,

stretch out. When your spine is correctly supported it can sleep.
relax in its neutral s-curve shape without pressure on the
discs and you get a good night’s sleep. Then your spine is
ready for another day of getting you moving!

Most people sleep on their side. When sleeping on the side, the
shoulders and hips create heavy pressure on the mattress. The
spine should be horizontally straight but with a natural s-curve.

A side sleeper may prefer a slightly body. This support keeps the spine in a
softer mattress. A softer mattress neutral position. A higher pillow should

Comfort properties
Firmness is what we call a comfort property. A comfort property is a feature of
the mattress that we can measure to describe the comfort that it gives.
Comfort properties, like firmness, are important for us when designing sleep
solutions. Other comfort properties than firmness covered in this part are pressure
distribution and point elasticity.

Look at the pictures to the right. The upper

picture shows a mattress that is too firm.
The person is simply lying on top of the mattress
and the mattress is not reacting and shaping
around the bodies contours. The mattress does
not provide proper support to the lower back
area and puts great pressure on the shoulders
and hips. The spine is not able to achieve the
correct position.

The middle picture shows a mattress that is

too soft and sags. A too soft mattress prevents
the spine from maintaining proper alignment.
It also does not provide good support for the
body, especially the hips and shoulders.

Neither of the above situations allows the
body to rest completely. The muscles must
work throughout the night to find a comfortable Figure 5, Too firm, too soft, just right.
position and the spine cannot rest in the
natural s-curve.

The lower picture shows a mattress with the correct firmness. You can see that
it follows the curvature of the body and allows the body’s heavier parts to sink
into the mattress. At the same time, the rest of the body is supported. This gives
correct spine alignment.

When we lie down, the mattress should contour to the body like you see in the
picture below.

It is important that the support from the mattress is evenly distributed and not
concentrated to the heavy parts only. If you are heavier in your hips for example,
you want the mattress to adapt to the body weight and contour to this part of your
body. Then your spine will be in its natural curve.

If certain parts of your body are exposed to too much pressure, this prevents good
blood circulation. A good pressure distribution is therefore very important. Even
pressure distribution enhances sleep quality.

6
SLEEP

Pressure distribution is a comfort

property. We can measure how well
a mattress adapts to and supports
the whole body dispersing pressure
through the whole mattress and not
concentrating it in one part. Even pressure distribution enhances sleep quality.

But the mattress should also help to disburse and relive the pressure from where
your hip is in contact with the mattress. Your hips should not carry the brunt of
the body’s weight. Otherwise this would be uncomfortable and you would want to
move around to get comfy resulting in sleep interruption.
The mattress also has to take care of your body’s "pointy bits", such as ankles,
heels, elbows, shoulders and hip bones. These body parts need some special care
from the mattress.

Point elasticity is the term for how the mattress reacts to point pressure. When
your elbow for example is in contact with the mattress there is pressure in this
area in a small concentrated place on the mattress. A mattress material with
high point elasticity will contour itself to this part of the body and also relieve the
pressure from this concentrated area.

A good mattress is one which has all three comfort properties
Latex, memory foam and pocket spring mattress all have exceptional pressure
distribution and point elasticity properties. The stretchable knitted ticking on the
foam and latex range enhances the point elasticity further.

The firmness of a foam or latex mattress depends on the type of foam or latex
used. The density of the material also affects the firmness. This being said, a high
density mattress is not always more firm than a low density mattress. But the
higher the density, the more resilient the mattress is to heavy weights. Higher
density also gives better durability.

A low density foam mattress usually feels soft. Latex is very dense but the
firmness depends on the construction of it. Memory foam mattresses have high
density but are least firm to medium firm because of its special weight and
temperature sensitive properties.

In a spring mattress, the firmness depends on many factors such as the thickness
of the spring wire, the number of turns and the height of the springs. There are
different types of springs that all can be made in different firmness grades.

All types of mattresses – foam, latex, sprung, and wooden-base sprung – are
available with different comfort properties in different firmness grades and price-
levels. As a rule of thumb, the heavier a person is, the firmer the mattress needs
to be; the lighter a person is, the less firm it could be.

7
SLEEP

It is important that the mattress provides the right support. When lying in bed,
the body should be supported as much as possible. If a person is lying on his/her
side, the spine should be straight, while the shoulders and hips should sink into
the mattress. Beyond this, which mattress a person chooses is solely a matter of
preference.

If a couple will be sharing a bed, they should try out the mattress together. If the
two partners need different comforts, they could consider separate mattresses, for
those countries that have 80 and 90cm mattresses in their range. If they want to
retain the feeling of a double bed they can lay a shared mattress pad over the top
of both mattresses, if they are sprung or wooden-base mattresses.

Children: Please note that it is not recommended for a child who is still growing to
sleep on a mattress with comfort zones.

Warm and cold sleepers

People perspire when they sleep. This is natural. It is your body’s way of
maintaining it is natural body temperature.

How much you perspire depends on if you are a so called warm or cold sleeper.
Warm sleepers are people who are warm and perspire a lot during sleep.
Cold sleepers are cooler, perspire less and prefer sleeping with thicker quilts and
blankets. The average amount of moisture that leaves the body each night is
about 75 cl!

Perspiration is also related to bedroom environment – a warmer bedroom will of

course make you perspire more.

How warm you feel during sleep depends mostly on the quilt. As a matter of fact,
80% of the body heat goes through the quilt and 20% through the mattress.

Allergies and mites

Over the past decades, allergies have increased dramatically. One cause is tight
insulation of our homes and double or triple glazed windows. These result in poor
ventilation and increased humidity.

How to reduce both the number of mites and risk of allergies:

• First of all, keep your bedroom clean. Dust and vacuum the mattress regularly.
Avoid having pets in the bedroom.
• Wash bed linen, mattress protectors and the remov-able covers on foam
mattresses (unless you’re using a mattress protector on top of it) in 60
degrees, every one or two weeks, as it kills the mites. It also gets rid of
any dead skin – mites’ favourite food!
• For an allergic person, synthetic materials are preferable because there is no
possibility of having any protein inside (Study of Pasteur Institute in 1999).
• Air out and shake bed linens and pillows outdoors.
• Put pillows or soft toys in the freezer for a short while as the mites will not
survive below zero degrees.
• If you are allergic, use man-made pillows and quilts. These can be washed more
often than those made from natural materials.
• Maintain good ventilation in the home to decrease humidity. Keep a window
open in the bedroom. The drier and cleaner the mattress and quilt, the better.
For you, not the mites!

IKEA does not use chemical

treatments to kill house dust
mites. These chemicals work
for a short time only. To have
a long-term effect, frequent
re-application is needed.
These chemicals are also
toxic to both environment
and humans.

9
SLEEP

Chemicals in mattresses
At IKEA we believe that everyone deserves a good night’s sleep, but not at the
expense of your long-term health or the envi-ronment. We know that many
chemicals found in furniture are harmful both to humans and the environment.
And it is unlikely that there are any chemicals in a mattress that can affect
humans and cause allergies.

IKEA avoids chemicals that are not absolutely necessary. That is why IKEA does
not use:

• Anti-bacterial treatments
• Anti-mite chemicals
• Stain protection chemicals

These chemicals can react when they come in contact with your skin. All
mattresses are tested for chemicals. This ensures that they pass the strictest
standards in the countries where they are sold.

The following substances are banned by IKEA:

• Carcinogenic substances, such as brominated

flame-retardants, are not allowed in production.
• Tinorganic compounds are not allowed. These substances disrupt the hormone
systems of animals and humans.
• Freon is not allowed. Freon destroys the earth’s protec-tive ozone layer.

Allergies to chemicals
in mattresses are much
less frequent than dust
mite allergies.

MATERIALS: FOAM & LATEX

MATERIALS for mattresses,

wooden base mattresses
and mattress pads

STANDARD FOAM
WHAT IS STANDARD FOAM?
Standard foam is a man-made type of foam sometimes called polyurethane foam
(PU or PUR foam), which is a basic kind of foam.

DURABILITY/CHARACTERISTICS
The cell structure is usually very fine and open, which makes the foam nice
in touch. Standard foam is also very versatile and available in a wide range of
densities and hardness. It can be made to feel very firm or extremely soft.

BENEFITS
Foam gives good support and shapes itself well to the contours of the body. It also
provides a stable sleeping comfort and absorbs the shock of body movements.

Standard foam is the same as

PU foam (polyurethane) or
PUR foam (polyurethane).

11
MATERIALS: FOAM & LATEX

HIGH RESILIENCE FOAM

WHAT IS HIGH RESILIENCE FOAM (HR FOAM)?

High resilience foam is a more advanced type of polyurethane foam found in the
chemicals used. HR foams use higher quality chemicals that contribute to the
elasticity.

DURABILITY/CHARACTERISTICS
The cell structure in high resilience foam is irregular and the properties depend on
the quality of the components used in the process and final density. Higher density
means better quality, better support and longer comfort time.

BENEFITS
High resilience foam has slightly better durability than standard foam and provides
good body support. It has very fast recovery and bounces back to its original
shape after compression.

Also known as HR foam.

12
MATERIALS: FOAM & LATEX

MEMORY FOAM
WHAT IS MEMORY FOAM?
Memory foam is polyurethane foam with additional chemicals to increase its
viscosity and density. Memory foam can feel firm in low temperatures but softens
in reaction to body heat and weight. This allows it to mould precisely to your body
in a few minutes and regain its natural shape.
Gel-infused memory foam is just like ordinary memory foam. The difference is,
except the gel capsules in the gel-infused memory foam take a longer time to
warm up, creating a cooler sleeping surface.

DURABILITY/CHARACTERISTICS
Memory foam is usually denser than other foams, making it both more supportive
and heavier.
Gel-infused memory foam is usually denser than other foams, making it both more
supportive and heavier.

BENEFITS
Memory foam provides very good pressure-relieving properties, improving blood
circulation to both muscles and skin and enables you to relax fully.
Gel-infused memory foam moulds to the body and improve the blood circulation to
both muscles and skin. The gel capsules in this memory foam take longer time to
warm up, creating a cooler sleeping surface.

Memory foam is also called Visco foam. Gel-infused memory foam.

13
MATERIALS: FOAM & LATEX

LATEX
Natural & synthetic

WHAT IS LATEX?
Natural Latex is extracted from the Hevea-Brasilienis tree, better known as the
rubber tree. After the latex is collected from the rubber trees, it is extracted and
processed to make foam that is poured onto a mould to create a mattress base.
Synthetic Latex is man-made.

DURABILITY/CHARACTERISTICS
Latex is very durable and composed of millions of open cells, which promotes
excellent air circulation. Latex is dense and can therefore feel heavy.
Natural latex is very elastic. Synthetic latex is less elastic but more consistent and
long-lasting.

BENEFITS
Latex gives a precise support for the whole body and is excellent at distributing
pressure. It also effectively absorbs the movements in bed, ensuring a restful and
uninterrupted sleep.
Natural latex is more flexible and supportive. Synthetic latex is less flexible and
supportive.

SUSTAINABILITY
Natural latex is a renewable material.

14
MATERIALS: SPRINGS

BONNELL SPRING
WHAT IS BONNELL SPRING?
Bonnell springs consists of 4 or 5 looped springs, hourglass-shaped to increase
resistance with load. The springs are connected with a helical wire and
manufactured in several wire dimensions to create the desired size and comfort
of spring core.
Mini Bonnell springs are lower type of Bonnell springs and are often used as a
second suspension system. This, together with the main suspension systems,
creates extra comfort and support the impact of a heavy load.

DURABILITY/CHARACTERISTICS
Bonnell springs are durable and common system in spring mattresses. Lying on
them can feel a bit “wavy” since all springs are connected.

BENEFITS
Bonnell springs give good support. It also release humidity due to open
construction with high airiness.
Mini Bonnell springs create extra comfort.

SUSTAINABILITY
Bonnell springs are made solely out of steel wire, which is easy to recycle and is
environmentally friendly.

15
MATERIALS: SPRINGS

POCKET SPRING
WHAT IS POCKET SPRING?
A pocket spring consists of 5 or 6 looped springs, barrel-shaped for best
performance. The springs are ultrasonic-welded into bags made of nonwoven
fabric, connected together by hot melt glue to form the right dimension of spring
core. Pockets are manufactured in several wire dimensions to create the desired
comfort.
Mini pocket spring is a type of pocket spring that gives extra comfort and softness.
Used together with either Bonnell or pocket springs to add additional support.

DURABILITY/CHARACTERISTICS
Pocket spring cores are very durable and will support any use very well.

BENEFITS
Pocket springs give very good support and respond quickly to any movements
since the springs work independently of each other. Compression occurs only
where loaded so movements of one person do not affect the other. Also release
humidity due to open construction.
Mini pocket springs create extra comfort.

SUSTAINABILITY
Pocket springs are made of steel wire and nonwoven fabric, which are recyclable
materials.

FABRIC
WHAT IS FABRIC?
Fabric consists of fibres that are spun into yarn, which is then woven into different
textiles. Textiles consist of natural or synthetic fibres, or a blend of both.
The most common natural fibres are cotton, linen and wool. Natural fi-bres often
feel softer and more pleasant to the touch than synthetic fibres.
Polyester and polyamide are examples of synthetic fibres. The advan-tages of
synthetic fibres are that they are hardwearing and do not shrink or stretch when
you wash them.
It is common to blend natural and synthetic fibres to obtain the strength of
synthetic fibres with the soft, pleasant touch of natural fibres. Different fibres have
different properties, and are used in various mixes to create the desired qualities.

DURABILITY/CHARACTERISTICS/BENEFITS/CARE
The strength of a fabric is determined by the fibre, yarn, weaving tech-nique and
final finishing. The strongest fibres are polyester, acrylic, polyamide and wool.
Tightly twisted yarn is stronger than loosely twisted yarn. And when it comes to
weaving, tightly woven, heavy fabrics with a smooth surface are the strongest.
Durability also depends on materials, construction and usage. Heavy, tightly
woven fabrics with a flat surface are most resistant to abrasion. Fabrics with a
mixture of natural and synthetic fibres can withstand abrasion better than fabrics
with only natural fibres. Yarn-dyed fabrics are more durable than fabrics with
printed patterns.
All fabrics are sensitive to sunlight, which is
why we also check that our fabrics resist fading
effectively. A dirty cover wears out faster than a
clean one.
A fabric’s ability to resist abrasion is tested by
using a machine to rub it against another fabric
while applying firm pressure. A fabric that can
take 15,000 cycles is suitable for furniture that
must withstand everyday life at home. If it can
take more than 30,000 cycles, it is very resistant
to abrasion.

17
MATERIALS: OTHER

SYNTHETHIC FIBRES AND

BLENDED MATERIALS
WHAT ARE SYNTHETHIC FIBRES AND BLENDED MATERIALS?
Synthetic fibres are very strong, easy to care for, and keep their shape well.
We use polyester and lyocell for our mattresses. Polyester is a man-made fibre
consisting of polymer.
Lyocell is a fabric made from wood pulp.

DURABILITY/CHARACTERISTICS/BENEFITS
Blended materials are simply a combination of different materials. The reason for
blending is to get the best qualities from each material. For example, by blending
cotton and linen, we get the lustre and texture of linen, and the softness and
durability of cotton. And by blending cotton and polyester, the result is a soft fabric
that both creases and shrinks less than a 100% cotton fabric.

Fabric: 100% polyester

Lyocell Synthetic fibres

18
MATERIALS: OTHER

FELT
WHAT IS FELT?
Felt is a cloth material made by rolling and pressing wool or another suitable
textile accompanied by the application of moisture or heat, which causes the
constituent fibres to mat together to create a smooth surface.

DURABILITY/CHARACTERISTICS
Felt used in combination with example Bonnell springs. It acts as a protection layer
between the spring core and comfort layer.

19
MATERIALS: OTHER

COTTON & WOOL

WHAT ARE NATURAL FIBRES?
Cotton, wool, coconut fibre, polyactide fibres, jute, & flax are natural renewable
raw materials that all have very good microclimate properties.

All natural materials have been sanitized and boiled before production into our
mattresses.

WHAT ARE COTTON & WOOL?

Cotton: is made from seed-hair from the cotton scrub. Woven to create fabric.
Wool: is from the fleece of sheep that can be woven into yarn and fabric.

DURABILITY/CHARACTERISTICS
Cotton: is strong and durable.
Wool: both soft and supportive. Wool is also naturally flame resistant.
BENEFITSCotton: is breathable and draws moisture away from the body.
Wool: regulates temperature and transports moisture in a highly efficient way.
It is warm in the winter and cool in the summer.

SUSTAINABILITY
Cotton is a renewable material. IKEA works within a project called Better Cotton
which aims to reduce water consumption in the cotton production.

MATERIALS: OTHER

COCONUT FIBRE &

POLYACTIDE FIBRE
WHAT ARE COCONUT FIBRES & POLYACTIDE FIBRES?
Coconut Fibre or Coir: is found between the husk and the outer shell of a coconut.
Polyactide or corn fibre wadding (PLA): is derived entirely from plants, primarily
corn and potatoes.

DURABILITY/CHARACTERISTICS
Coconut Fibre or Coir: gives stability and is very durable.
Polyactide or corn fibre wadding: also has a natural fire resistance.

BENEFITS
Coconut Fibre or Coir: creates a good microclimate meaning your individual
environment is regulated in temperature.
Polyactide or corn fibre wadding: good moisture transporting properties.

SUSTAINABILITY
Polyactide (PLA) is renewable and bio-degradable.

21
MATERIALS: OTHER

JUTE & FLAX FIBRES

WHAT ARE JUTE & FLAX FIBRES?
Jute: is a long, soft and shiny vegetable fibre that can be spun into coarse strong
threads.
Flax or linen: is a fibre crop. Textiles that are made from flax are referred to linen.

DURABILITY/CHARACTERISTICS
Jute: these fibres are very long making them extremely durable. Jute has both
sound and heat insulating properties. This is why it is traditionally popular with rug
manufacturers.
Flax or Linen: linen is known as the worlds strongest natural fibre. It is made to
last a long time.

BENEFITS
Jute: Long lasting and low cost.
Flax or Linen: A strong fabric can be continuously washed.

SUSTAINABILITY
Jute is highly renewable, needs very little water to grow & bio-degradable.

22
MATERIALS: WOOD

SOLID WOOD
for Wooden Base Spring Mattresses (WBSM)

WHAT IS SOLID WOOD?

Solid wood is a natural material, made from tree trunks. It can be cut into
pieces (lamellas, or staves), which are glued together to form a bigger
surface, called glue board.

For WBSM, we usually use pine or spruce.

DURABILITY/CHARACTERISTICS
Low scratch resistance.
Comparably higher in price.
Heavy in weight.

BENEFITS
Solid wood has a long lifespan and can be refinished and repaired over the
years. It makes for a very stable foundation.

QUALITY & TESTING

Quality & testing Mattresses

All mattresses are tested to ensure they meet the strictest standards in any of the
countries in which they are sold. The strictest demands are valid for all markets.
(More knowledge can be found in the training module on "Quality and Guarantee")

Durability
To test strength and durability we use a machine that
simulates the movements of a person weighing 140 kg rolling
around in bed 50,000 times. A pressure gauge measures the
effect on springs, frames, slats and fillings. The construction
must hold up to the highest requirements.

Flammability
Tests are conducted by placing a cigarette on different areas
of the mattress. For UK and North America, the requirements
are higher, and an open flame is used to test flame
resistance. Both countries have slightly different requirements
on the materials and zippers to pass the flammability tests
and for these reasons we have a unique range for the UK and
another range only for the USA.

Comfort
We test the individual mattresses comfort features such as
Firm pressure distribution, point elasticity, flexibility, temperature
and moisture distribution. We also test the firmness of all
mattresses. This is performed using a pressure test, which
Medium Firm
records the resistance when pressure is put on the mattress.

25
QUALITY & TESTING

Fabric
Special fabric tests are conducted to ensure strength,
durability, washability and stain resistance. The tests include
pulling and tearing, and spilling liquids to ensure the ticking
resists stains from various fluids.

Chemicals
The general policy at IKEA is to avoid all chemicals that are
not absolutely necessary. That's why we deliberately refrain
from using e.g. antibacterial treatment, anti-mite chemicals
and scotch guard. All mattresses are tested for chemicals to
ensure that they meet strictest standards in the countries in
which they are sold.

CARE & CLEANING

Care & cleaning mattresses

and mattress pads
Taking care of a mattress is all too often forgotten. This is too bad because it takes
so little time and results in better sleep!

Here are some tips:

• A mattress pad and a mattress protector keeps the mattress clean and inviting.
Rotate and air the mattress pad, and wash the mattress protector regularly.
• Vacuum the mattress, mattress pad and mattress base from time to time. Open
windows while vacuuming, especially if someone has an allergy or asthma.
• If something spills and stains the mattress, use a mild soapy solution with cold
water and furniture shampoo. Apply water sparingly. Avoid all chemicals as these
can seriously damage the mattress and have a negative effect on health.
• Dont bend the mattress. This can cause damage to interior springs and
materials. If you need to get the mattress through a tight doorway, flex it gently.
• When carrying the mattress, carry it on its side. This is the easiest way to
handle the mattress and will help avoid damage. Use the handles on the sides of
the mattress only when you rotate the mattress, never when you carry it.

When is it time to get rid of a mattress? And what do you do with an old, used
mattress?

Even the best mattresses lose comfort with age. Older mattresses will have
accumulated dust and mites as well.

Once the customer has decided it is time for a new mattress, IKEA can arrange
for the pick-up and responsible disposal of their old mattress. Check with your
Manager on your local country agreement how this is handled.

FOAM & LATEX MATTRESSES

Foam and latex mattresses

Polyurethane foam
Polyurethane is supple, resilient and retains its shape well.
The polyurethane in our mattresses weighs from 25 kg per
cubic metre up to 35 kg per cubic metre. The higher the
density, the more resilient the mattress is to heavy weights,
and the longer it is likely to last.

High resilience foam (HR foam)

This type of foam is produced in a different way that
makes it more elastic and gives it a higher density. HR of
foam is suitable for heavier loads and is also longer lasting
compared to normal foam.
30 to 35 kg per cubic metre.

Memory foam
Memory foam provides high pressure-relieving properties,
improving blood circulation to both muscles and skin and
enabling you to relax more fully. Memory foam is also a
temperature and weight sensitive foam that moulds precisely to
your body and regains its natural shape when not in use. 50 kg
per cubic metre.

Latex (natural & synthetic)

Latex is a natural material, but it can also be produced
synthetically, by means of a fermentation process. In IKEA
we use both natural och synthetic latex. Latex provides
precise support for the whole body and is highly flexible
and resilient. It is composed of millions of open cells giving
excellent air circulation, not retaining moisture. 63 kg per
cubic metre.

SPRUNG MATTRESSES

Sprung mattresses

IKEA uses four types of springs for its mattresses: Bonnell, pocket springs, mini
pocket springs and mini Bonell springs. All springs are made of wire, the thickness
of which determines how soft or firm a mattress feels. The thicker the wire, the
firmer the mattress. Thick wire provides more support but it less flexible and
produces a mattress that is a less supple.

Bonnell Springs used for the core of this mattress.

They are durable and a common system in spring mattresses.
Lying on them can feel a bit “wavy” since all springs are
connected.

Mini Bonnell springs used in the base of this mattress.

Pocket springs used for the core of this mattress.

Pocket springs give very good support and respond quickly to
any movements since the springs work independently of each
other.

Mini-pocket springs used as a top comfort layer in this

mattress.

Spring mattresses distribute the weight of your body evenly over the entire
mattress, eliminating undue pressure on any part of the body.

Spring mattresses are extremely durable and can be turned in all directions to
ensure even wear and extend the life of the mattress.

You can customise your sleeping comfort by complementing with a mattress pad
and a slatted bed base or mattress base.

WOODEN BASE SPRUNG

Wooden-base-sprung
mattresses
• Wooden-base spring mattresses have a self-supporting frame made of pine,
spruce or aspen and most have a double layer of springs, so they don’t require
an additional bed base. Just fit with legs or runners and you have a complete
bed. Or place in a bed frame.

• Sprung mattresses distribute the weight of your body evenly over the entire
mattress, eliminating undue pressure on any part of the body.

• Further customise your sleeping comfort by complementing with a mattress pad.

MATTRESS PADS

Mattress pads

• A mattress pad provides additional comfort on the sleeping surface, closest to

your body.
• Mattress pads protect the mattress from dust and soiling and increase the life of
the mattress.
• Mattress pads are easy to remove for airing and cleaning and make your
sleeping experience more hygienic.

IKEA recommends that customers also use a mattress pad as this provides
additional surface comfort – soft or firm, depending on the thickness and material.
Mattress pads are available in several different qualities at IKEA.

An important benefit of a mattress pad is that it enables people to customise

the bed comfort. Customers can decide for themselves what degree of softness
they want closest to their bodies by choosing between mattress pads of different
thickness and material.

Some mattress pads also help to maintain an even body temperature. Thanks to
the use of natural materials in the filling.

Buying a new mattress pad is a simple and inexpensive way to refresh and
rejuvenate a bed.

We do not recommend using a mattress pad on foam and latex mattresses as this
reduces the characteristics of the materials resulting in poorer comfort. Instead a
mattress cover or protector should be used to protect the mattress.

When it comes to children this is a slightly different matter. It is fine to combine

foam mattress without comfort zones and a mattress pad together to give a
softer comfort. Please remember that mattresses with comfort zones are not
recommended to children who are still growing.

Remember to add a mattress protector. This will help to keep your mattress pad
hygenically fresh and clean.

MATTRESS BASES

Mattress bases
• Mattress bases combined with a mattress and legs give a bed that stands high
from the ground, making it easier to get in and out of bed.
• ESPEVÄR mattress bases can be combined with foam latex and sprung offer.
• You can customise your sleeping comfort by complementing with a mattress pad.

The purpose of both mattress bases and slatted bed bases is to extend the life of
the sleep system. They absorb the major portion of stress and weight placed on
the sleep surface and work much like the shock absorber in a car’s suspension
system, by eliminating stress in the mattress. Mattress bases and slatted bed
bases prolong the life of the mattresses and extend its comfort.
When a customer buys a new mattress, it's advisable to recommend that they
buy a new mattress base or slatted bed base too.

There are two types of mattress bases combinations:

• Mattress base with slats (ESPEVÄR)
• Mattress base with Bonnell springs added. (ESPEVÄR + ENGAVÅGEN)
• Mattress base with slats (EIDFJORD) sold in NA only.

Mattress bases with slats (ESPEVÄR & EIDFJORD)

Why have slats in a bed base? The slats
provide extra springiness to the bed and
absorb movements from the body. Mattress
bases with slats can be combined with all
matt-resses except of course wooden base
spring mattresses.

Mattress bases with bonnell springs (ESPEVÄR + ENGAVÅGEN)

This type of mattress base is often called a box spring mattress base. They have
bonnell springs that add extra comfort to the sleep solution. Box spring mattress
bases are best combined with spring mattresses. This gives a similar comfort as
a wooden base spring mattress where the bottom layer also consists of bonnell
springs.

BED SLATS

Bed slats
• Combined with a bed frame, fixed slatted bed-bases can be used as a base for
all sprung, foam and latex mattresses.
• They absorb the shocks from your movements on the mattress and provide
additional springiness. Some also have slats adjustable in firmness so the
comfort can be adapted to the individual.
• Some can be adjusted at the head- or foot ends of the bed, allowing you to sit
up to read or watch television and to keep your legs elevated.

The purpose of both mattress bases and slatted bed bases is to extend the life of
the sleep system. They absorb the major portion of stress and weight placed on
the sleep surface and work much like the shock absorber in a car’s suspension
system by eliminating stress in the mattress. Mattress bases and slatted bed bases
prolong the life of the mattresses and improve its comfort.

When a customer buys a new mattress, it's advisable to recommend that they buy
a new mattress base or slatted bed base too.

A slatted base is used in bed frames with mattresses that do not have a self-
supporting frame.

A slatted base can be fixed or adjustable. Adjustable slatted bases have an

adjustable mid section or zones for individual comfort. They can also be adjusted
either at the head end of the bed or at both the head- and foot ends. This allows
the bed's occupants to read or watch television in a comfortable reclining position.

Adjustable slatted bed bases can only be used with foam and latex mattresses.
These mattresses will bend and flex to the position of the slats.
Note: Using a sprung mattress will result in the damaging of the spring coils,
altering their shape and comfort.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Q&A Selling Sleep

comfort training

OBS: do not use these answers when talking to customers

without “translating” them to benefits.

CO-WORKER QUESTIONS –

Q: In what way do springs and upholstery add to the comfort of a

mattress?

A: The springs offer support for the different parts of the body, while the
upholstery conforms and cradles the body.

Q: Bonnell and pocket springs - which one is the better and why?

A: Both offer good support, bonnell springs are more breathable while pocket
springs are more independent. What you choose depends on which feels better to
you. Bonnell springs are extremely durable and cost effective. So we have chosen
to continue using bonnell springs in the range while adding more springs and more
upholstery layers for comfort. This is in contrast to some competition that offers
pocket spring mattresses at a low price, but without the support and comfort that
we have. You have to feel it to believe it!

Q: What, in a mattress, affects the firmness?

A: Firmness can be described as a combination of support from the springs being

the wire thickness (or foam core in a foam mattress) and the comfort or the
cushioning upholstery layers on top. The feeling of ‘firmness’ is subjective and
varies from person to person, and from culture to culture.

Q: Why have you taken the foam boxes away from the low price
mattresses and how does it affect the quality?

A: The foam boxes were replaced with more springs for greater support. The foam
box in low price did not add a specific customer benefit. The quality is better due
to having more springs closer together in the low price mattresses.

70
QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Q: Why then do we keep foam boxes for the mid price mattresses?

A: The foam boxes in mid price mattresses have been increased in density and
firmness to offer more stability for the pocket springs because they are not tied
together with a helical wire like the bonnell springs.

Q: I have heard that thinner springs give good support for lighter people
and thicker springs support heavier people but now we have the same
thickness in all springs – how will this affect the support of different
weight people?

A: The steel springs are actually ‘progressive’ in the amount of support they
provide. This means that the more they are pressed, the more support they give.
The springs we are using and the increased amount of springs we use provide
support for a wide range of different weights and sizes.

Q: I have learned that you should turn your spring mattress over ever so
often to prolong it´s life. Why are the new mattresses made so that they
should not be turned?

A: Our spring mattresses have been designed so that they do not require turning.
These mattresses have the comfort layers concentrated on the top sleeping surface
for comfort and are built up from a solid foundation for durability. While the
mattresses do not require turning, they can be rotated to even wear.

Q: Does more springs in a mattress mean better quality?

A: It is not only the number of springs that determines quality. If you compare two
mattresses that are exactly the same except for the number of springs, you can
feel a difference. However, overall quality is measured by the support, comfort and
how long the mattress lasts.

Q: Does more springs rather than less mean a mattress is firmer?

A: Yes, more springs of the same design and wire diameter will mean that a
mattress will be firmer than one with fewer springs while everything else remains
the same.

71
QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Q: What are the basic principles behind the build up of a mattress in

regards to comfort, firmness and quality?

A: Quality begins with the materials and components we use to build the mattress.
We choose only the highest quality components and rigorously check that they
meet our quality specifications. Firmness or support is created with the springs
– we use a network of Bonnell ‘open’ springs, or independent ‘pocket’ springs to
provide support for the body. Comfort is created with the fabric, fibre, and foam in
the upholstery layers that conform to and cradle the body.

Q: Why have we chosen to use the type of springs, foam and latex that we
have in the products today?

A: We have chosen the materials used in the mattresses based on our experience
and knowledge about healthy sleep and based on our requirements for safe,
healthy cost, effective, and more sustainable products.

Q: Why does IKEA not recommend to use adjustable slats to the spring
range?

We do not recommend selling (and showing) the sprung mattress range on

adjustable slats. The reason for this is twofold:

Visually, when you elevate the slats, there is a gap between the mattress and the
slats. This is of course visible both when showed on the shop floor, but also at a
customer’s home. The gap disappears when you sit on it. Besides that, it is more
difficult to ‘bend’ a spring mattress and therefore the customer will be less pleased
with the performance of an adjustable slat.

When you sit on a mattress when the bases is adjusted, the springs may
intertwine, which results in a ‘clicking’ noise. As we have added more springs and
packed them closer together, the risk of having more of this noise is increased. You
can imagine that when using a slat with both an adjustable foot and head section
the effect is even more ‘dramatic’.

Both ‘side effects’ of using adjustable slatted bed bases with spring mattresses do
not have an impact on the product quality of either the spring mattress or the slat,
although it may increase the wear on the mattress. However, it has huge impact
on the customer perceived quality, hence the decision not to recommend it.

72
QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

CUSTOMER QUESTIONS AND RECOMMENDED ANSWERS

Q: Why does IKEA roll pack their mattresses?

A: Roll packed mattresses are easier for customers to bring home themselves;
they do not have to arrange for transport home. Furthermore, roll packed
mattresses take less space and are easier to handle in self serve, they cost less to
transport which means that we can have lower prices and also cause less impact
on the environment.

Q: How will the roll-pack affect the look and comfort of the mattress?

A: When the mattress is opened there will be some wrinkles visible that have no
effect on comfort or function. Roll packed mattresses regain their full shape after
3-4 days of use.

Q: How quickly after unpacking my new roll packed mattress can I start
using it?

A: Your new mattress can be used right away, but initially it can seem a bit too
firm. Allow one month for your body to get used to the mattress and for the
mattress to get used to your body.

Q: Why does my mattress have an odour? How do I get rid of this odour?

A: All new materials have their own particular smell, which is not harmful and
gradually disappears. Airing and vacuuming the mattress will help to eliminate the
smell.

Q: How does IKEAs quality compare to your competitors?

A: Instead of purchasing just whatever finished products a manufacturer has for

sale, we control our entire supply chain from raw material to finished product,
ensuring the highest quality at each step. IKEA mattresses are designed by and
produced for the world’s largest home furnishings retailer.

Q: Your competitor has got x amount of springs in their mattresses. How

many has this mattress got?

A: I have that information for you, but first may I ask does the mattress feel
comfortable to you?

73
QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Q: Do you have anti-allergy mattresses?

A: We have both natural and synthetic ingredients in our mattresses and can
explain which components are in each of them so dependent on your allergy or
sensitivity you can decide which mattress suits you best.

Q: What is the difference between the spring, latex and foam mattresses?

A: All are designed to give proper healthy support, but differ in the ‘feel’. Some
people simply prefer to sleep on springs, or they like the cradling feel of memory
foam – it is a personal decision.

Q: What is the difference between natural latex and synthetic latex?

A: Natural latex is made from rubber tree sap, and synthetic latex is man-made.
Synthetic latex has the same properties as natural latex, but is more consistent
and long lasting.

Q: Which mattresses do you recommend for children?

A: Any mattress that offers comfortable support, preferably with no zones. Refer to
the section on children’s mattresses in this handbook.

Q: What is the mattress pad for?

A: A mattress pad provides additional comfort on the sleeping surface, closest to

your body. They protect the mattress from dust and soiling and increase the life of
the mattress. Mattress pads are easy to remove for airing and cleaning.

Q: Why do you not recommend mattress pads for foam and latex?

A: A mattress pad can be added to a foam or latex mattress for a different comfort
level if that is what you prefer. But the addition of the pad may mask some of the
comfort properties of the foam or latex layers in the mattresses.

Q: What is the maximum weight on slat bases?

A: The slatted bed bases are tested for durability with a 140kg roller – they are
not tested beyond that.

BABY SLEEP

Baby sleep

Babies 0-2 years

Sleep and baby care, the basics The safest way for babies to sleep is alone in
a cot, until they are able to climb out of the cot. Cots and cot mattresses make up
the core of the IKEA Baby sleep range. Depending on the age of the baby, cots are
completed with bed textiles, quilts, pillows, blankets and mattress protectors.

For newborns, and until a baby is able to sit up and roll around on its own, we
recommend placing only the bare minimum in the cot with the baby, So there
should not be pillows, blankets or toys of any kind in the crib.

More can be safely added to the crib as the baby grows older and has more
mobility and does not risk suffocation from loose blankets and other objects in the
crib.

The cot mattress must be a perfect fit to the cot. If it is too small or too big,
there will be gaps where the baby can get stuck and risk injury. This is why
we recommend IKEA cot mattress be purchased along with IKEA cots. They fit
together perfectly.

Our cot mattresses come in different thicknesses and with different cover types.
They are all made of breathable materials that help regulate the temperature of
the baby’s sleeping environment. All baby IKEA cot mattresses have the same level
of safety.

For hygienic reasons, Children’s IKEA recommends buying a new mattress for each
newborn.

The mattress protector is made of non-breathing material. It should be placed

sideways on the bed and should never be placed under the baby’s head – where it
can be a suffocation hazard and make sleeping uncomfortably warm. This is why
the mattress protector is smaller than the mattress, and not fitted.
