1 INTRODUCTION
The scavenge air receiver compartments are provided with drains to remove oily water. In
some cases the drain pipes of the receiver compartments before and after the Flap-valves or
Reed-valves are connected to a common drain line.
During auxiliary blower operation the pressure difference between the compartments before
and after the flaps may cause back-flow of oily water to the compartment before the flaps,
contaminating both the receiver space and the water separator.
For those engines that have a direct connection between these compartments via a common
drain line (as described above), an orifice plate fitted in the drain pipe of the space after the
water separator will prevent this contamination.

2 EXECUTION
The recommended diameter of the orifice is 8 mm.
The orifice plate should be made of stainless steel or brass to prevent rusting, with a thickness
of 3 to 4 mm.
The orifice plate should be fitted in a vertical part of the drain pipe close to the common drain
line.
If the drain of the compartment after the water separator is fitted with a butterfly valve close
to the common drain line, the orifice may be drilled in the valve.
Couplings, flanges and valves that are fitted with an orifice should be clearly marked
indicating the orifice location and size. An example is shown on page 3 for an orifice plate
fitted in a flange coupling.
The orifice plates should be periodically checked for obstruction and erosion e.g. every six
months.
