a. Professional and Personal Goals

Goal 1: Incorporate a variety of instructional techniques into classes and rehearsals, to best foster
all types of learning.
• Rationale: I found in my PSII I became slightly stuck in a strict rehearsal technique.
While having a predictable routine is beneficial to student’s comfort and learning, I think
to incorporate different styles of instruction would benefit students more effectively
along the broader instructional spectrum
Goal 2: Develop a cohesive style of classroom management and leadership specific to the band
room and rehearsal-type lessons that works effectively.
• Rationale: Students found in the band room are generally eager to be there and excited to
listen and learn, yet for those who want to be disruptive, helpful tools are on hand. I think
having a simple, effective management routine in place would help aid the students who
feel the need to disruptive classroom flow and the students who are eager to listen and are
frustrated by these disruptions. By giving students time to be creative and independent,
our focused learning time can be more effective.
Personal Goal: To complete all necessary work by 8:30 pm each night, to allow time for rest and
personal time.
• Rationale: I find that it is easy to let practicum over-take every aspect of life while
immersed in it. Although it is good to spend time to assure you are producing the best
lessons, assessments etc. for your students, it is also essential to take time for yourself
and rest in order to be of sane mind. This also benefits your students in that you will feel
more energetic at school when you are working with them!

b. Strategies
Goal 1:
• Review method books and techniques for additional lesson and rehearsal strategies
• Attend rehearsals for concert band and choir (as I feel like these musical skills will carry
over) and observe/try out techniques seen in these rehearsals
• Ask other student teachers/teachers of music their favourite rehearsal/lesson techniques
Goal 2:
• Study method and text books on the subject (ex; Wong & Wong)
• Observe other teacher’s classrooms to learn from their management styles
• Study cumulative files, observe and combine lists of techniques that work for certain
students (tailor 1 lesson for the needs of 1 specific student, see how it affects the other
students, form of UDL)
Personal Goal:
• Effectively use prep periods during school hours to minimize school work done at home
• When preparing lesson plans and other school work, do so without distractions such as;
YouTube, Netflix and other people. This will allow for more efficient an effective work.
(Do listen to some instrumental music though, as it helps with your productivity).
• Set a timer for 8:30 every evening, to be sure you don’t get distracted and miss your
deadline.
c. Indicators of Progress
• Goal 1: Students learning at a faster pace and are more engaged in class. Students who
would generally struggle are feeling as if their needs are being met.
• Goal 2: Fewer incidents of undesired behaviour and disruptions. Classroom atmosphere
more focused and positive.
• Personal Goal: More energetic and engaging during school hours, feel well rested and
have experienced life (such as rehearsals, reading a book or knitting a hat) outside of
teaching band.

d. Timeline for Completion
