1 John 5:10 He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself:
(who is the witness? See verse 6: “And it is the Spirit that beareth witness, because the
Spirit is truth.” It is the Holy Spirit that is the witness. The witness that tells YES, I’ve
seen it, the Word of God is true, YES you’re saved, YES you’re going to heaven, YES.
A capital S means the Holy Spirit, small letter means every other spirit.
So what is the Holy Spirit witnessing? The Holy Spirit lives inside us if we’re saved,
telling us, YES you are, a child of God.
Now in this verse there are only 2 kinds of people. There’s no room for anyone in this
verse that doesn’t fall into one of these 2 categories. He draws aline and says there’s 2
kinds of people in this world: There are those that believe on the Son of God (they have
the witness in themselves) and there are those who do not believe God, and it says that
they have made God a liar.
If they do not believe on Christ, why are they calling God a liar? Look at the last phrase:
because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son.
So one side we have a person who believes on Jesus Christ, he’s got the witness in hims
self, he’s got the Holy Spirit.
Then we have another person who does NOT believe on Jesus Christ. In fact he’s making
God a liar because he is saying “I don’t believe the record that God gave of his Son.”
Let’s break this verse down and you will see that everything we need to know to be saved
is right there.
First it says that God hath given to us. That means it’s a gift, he didn’t make us earn it, he
didn’t make us work for it. The Bible says “For by grace are you saved through faith, it is
the gift of God” See it’s the gift of God, not of works lest any man should boast.
So #1 you’ve got to believe that God have GIVEN to us eternal life. Notice something
else – it’s past tense. Not well someday I’m going to die and find out whether I have
eternal life, it says look, he already gave it to you. He hath given to us, that’s past tense.
That means you’re already saved (with a d on the end). It means it’s done, it’s not “Well I
hope so, I’m trying to get my way to heaven.”
And now I have been given eternal life, so what’s the next thing? It’s eternal life. Not,
I’ve been given temporary life. Not I’ve been given conditional life, conditional on how I
live or what I do. No it says we’ve been given eternal life. That means it can never end…
everlasting, eternal. If not, then God is lying.
SO what he is saying is that People who are save, they just believe that God gave them
eternal life. He just gave it to them, and that it will last forever, and that it is through
Jesus Christ. Isn’t that simple and uncomplicated and straight forward?
So he’s saying that if you don’t believe that God gave us eternal life; if you believe God
gave us life we could lose somehow, like we could be saved and then lose it. Or that he
gave us a life that’s eternal, but you’re saying no I don’t believe that, I believe that if I
commit suicide or murder he’ll take it away from me. I believe if I get out of church he
will take it away from me…
He says you’re calling God a liar, you do not have the witness in yourself, you do not
believe on Jesus Christ.
That’s what the Bible teaches, and that truth no doubt offends many, but according to this
verse, anyone who doesn’t believe that God gave us eternal life is not saved.
You say why? I’ll tell you why. People who don’t believe in eternal life, people who
believe you can be saved, and you can do something, someway, to become unsaved again
after you’ve already been saved… they are putting it off Jesus Christ now to be saved and
putting it on themselves, because now it’s their responsibility to make sure that they keep
on believing what they were suppose to believe, or keep on going to church or living a
good life. People who believe you can lose your salvation will say “Well you can’t just
live however you want.” What they are saying is you have to live a certain way in order
to go to heaven. It’s no longer, believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shall be saved.
Here in 1 John he is saying God has given us eternal life.
Look at Titus 1:2 (right before Hebrews) See how consistent God’s word is on this
subject:
“In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began.”
If you don’t believe God gives you eternal life, you are calling God a liar.
SO once again there are 2 kinds of people. Those who believe on Jesus Christ and believe
the record, they believe God that they have eternal life…
And then there are those who say NO, God’s a liar. It’s not eternal. I have to do
something to maintain it, or I’m in danger of somehow losing it.
Let me show you some verse that will show you why you can not lose your salvation.
That once you are saved, there is nothing you can do or believe that would cause you to
lose your salvation.
Once saved, there is nothing I can do that would cause me to go to hell, because the
moment I go to hell, then God is a liar, cause God says I’ve been given eternal life. There
is no way I could go to hell even if I wanted to… or God, who said he has given me
eternal life is a liar.
So how do I know?
#1 because of the record of God which we’ve just read.
Psalm 89:26-37
Talking about Jesus Christ.
29 his seed – did Jesus have physical children? No this is talking about us.
30 – If we forsake his law…
SO God does not send us to hell even if we break all his commandments, when we’re
saved. He has sworn by his holiness.
John 5:24 …He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting
life, and shall not come into condemnation, but has passed from death unto life.
John 10:25-30
