Narrative Text

Narrative text is a kind of text to retell the story that past tense. The purpose of the
text is to entertain or to amuse the readers or listeners about the story.

1. The generic structure of Narrative text :

a. Orientation :
It set the scene and introduce the participants (it answers the question : who, when,
what, and where).

b. Complication :

Tells the problems of the story and how the main characters solve them.

c. Resolution :

The crisis is revolved, for better or for worse.

d. Re-orientation :

The ending of the story.

e. Coda (an optional step) :

The stepping back to evaluate the story or the moral message of the story

2. Linguistic characteristics of Narrative Text:

a. Use active verb in past tense

Example : asked, attacked, wanted, etc

b. Use conjunction ( time connectives).

Example : then, before, soon, etc

c. The first person (I or We) or the third person (He, She, or They).

d. Use specific nouns.

Example : actress, waitress, uncle, prince, etc

e.Use adjective and adverbs

Example : a. Diligent, Calm, Helpful,etc ( Adjective)

b.Outside, Quickly, Always, etc (Adverb)


3.Kind of Narrative text :

a. Legend : Sangkuriang, Malin Kundang, etc.

b. Fable : Mousedeer and crocodile.

c. Fairy tale : Cinderella, Snow white, Pinocchio, etc.

The Story
The Prince and His Best Friends

Once upon a time, there lived a kind young prince named Jonathan. He was loved,
and adored by his people. His two close friends were Peter Piper, the servant of the palace
and Franklin Greedy, the son of an Aristocrat.

One day, The Prince, Peter Piper, and Franklin Greedy were walking through the
forest. Suddenly a group of bandits attacked the three boys near an old house. They entered
the old house and blockaded the gate and doors. The three boys were trapped inside the
house.

Franklin was very terrified and asked the Prince to surrender immediately, but Peter
was not afraid. He urged and supported the Prince not to give up. The Prince decided not to
surrender because he realized that he would become a hostage for the bandits to ask for
ransom to his father, but Franklin was scared and wanted to make a deal, it made Peter
suspicious about Franklin’s behaviour. So he quietly made up a plan for him and the Prince to
escape.

Early at dawn, Franklin opened the front gate and unlocked the doors. The bandits
entered the house in search of the Prince. When they came to the room where the Prince was
supposed to be sleeping, no one was there. Suddenly they heard a horse running outside the
house and saw over the window that Peter Piper and the Prince were riding away on one of
the bandit’s horses.

It turns out, Peter Piper sneaked out of the house and waited in the yard, while the
Prince was hiding behind the house. The bandits were very angry at Franklin and took him
with them while the Prince and Peter went safely going back to the Capital.
Analysis of the story
1. Generic Sturcture
Orientation Once upon a time, there lived a kind
young prince named Jonathan. He was loved,
and adored by his people. His two close friends
were Peter Piper, the servant of the palace and
Franklin Greedy, the son of an Aristocrat.
Complication One day, The Prince, Peter Piper, and

3. Main Idea
The main idea of the narrative text in tittle “The Prince and His Best Friends” are :

a. Paragraph 1 : Prince Jonathan and his friends.

b. Paragraph 2 : Prince and his friends attack by the bandits. Then, they trap inside
the old house.

c. Paragraph 3 : Franklin’s behaviour make Peter spocius.Then, he make a plan for


him and the Prince to escape.

d. Paragraph 4 : Peter’s strategy to escape him and prince.

e. Paragraph 5 : Peter and Prince go safely going back to the Capital

4. Moral Value
Based on the text above, we can take the moral value is “Don’t be fast to surrender
and hopeless in all situation. And keep calm to slove the problem . ”
