4 Practical English
Vocabulary
Aims
• Learn to ask for and give directions.
• Identify true and false sentences about places on a map using
prepositions of place.
• Follow directions and identify destinations.

Warm-up
• Ask students whether people ever ask them for directions in
their town. If so, how good are they at giving directions? How
good are they at reading maps? Do their parents use maps
when they drive or do they have satnavs?

Exercise 1
• Give students plenty of time to study the map. Remind them
that we use prepositions of place to say where things are in
relation to other things. They used behind, between, in front of,
next to, in, on and under in the Starter unit on page 6, but it
might be worth having a quick revision session, asking them
to identify the relative positions of objects in the classroom.
Teach opposite if they don’t already know it.
• Ask students to read the sentences and decide if they are
true or false. Then ask them to correct the false ones in their
notebooks.
• Allow students to compare their answers in pairs before
checking with the class.
