PASS AND MOVEMENT (1)

Drill Objective(s)

1. To train Passing and movement to support.

2. To train players to maintain possession.

 Drill No: SSG2

 Age: 12-Adult
 No Players: 8+
 Difficulty: Medium
 Area/Time: 20x40yrds (25mins)

Diagram 1

ORGANISATION: Mark out a grid is 20 x 40yrds, depending on age and ability of

players. Play 4vs4, 5vs5 or even 6vs6. The field size for this small sided game can be
modified depending on the number of players, their age and skill level. The training
field is split using cones into 4 triangle sectors. INSTRUCTIONS:

2 teams compete to try and score in the soccer goals. The condition of the game is that
every time a pass is made, that player must move to another triangle (sector) if they
want to receive the ball. If they violate this rule and get the ball passed back to them in
the same triangle then a free-kick is awarded to the other team.

1. Player A1 passing into the forward player.

2. Before being able to receive the ball again during this possession, A1 has to
move to another triangular zone.
3. A2 passes into A3 and then has to move to another zone also before being able
to receive the ball again (In this example, A2 moves into the same zone which
A3 occupies.)

SCORING: Score in the regular goals. Progressions for scoring can be as follows: 1
point for a two touch finish and 2 points for a one touch finish. KEY COACHING
POINTS:

1. Good support for the player with the ball, move to support him/her.
2. Pass and move immediately to support where the pass was made.
3. Spread out on attack.

PROGRESSIONS:

1. Play two touch.

VARIATIONS:

1. Instead of one goal at each end, 2 smaller goals can be set up at each side of the
goal line.

(2) WARM UP
Drill Objective(s)soWA

WWwarm ups and warm up routines

1. Prepare players for a game by increasing core body temperature.

2. Active warm up stretches to prepare muscles for activity.

 Drill No: WU5

 Age: 12-Adult soccer warm ups and warm up
 No Players: 4+
 Difficulty: Easy
 Area/Time: 10yrds (5-10mins)

Diagram 1
ORGANISATION: Players perform a small warm up circuit, constructed from 2
hurdles (1yrd apart), (cones could be used) and 2 sets of 3 cones each which have a
different SAQ fast feet activity. The cones should be 1 stride (1yrd) apart.
INSTRUCTIONS:

Players start on either side of the hurdles in 2 groups. The first player from a group
steps in and out the hurdles laterally then progresses on to the cones on his or her side.
Each set of cones is assigned an activity. These can be varied depending on the coaches
goals of the warm up.

1) Player side steps laterally in and out of the hurdle set, then advances to one of the
footwork courses:

2b) Blue Cones:

Zig-zags (shuffle in and out of the cones facing the end (blue) cone.
Bunny hops ( 2 feet together) over the cones.
Right foot hops over cones.
Left foot hops over the cones.

2a) Orange Cones:

Side step over the cone (Both feet touch in the gaps).
Side step over the cone (One foot in each gap).
Forward runs over cones (Both feet touch in the gaps).
Forward runs over cones (One foot in the gaps).
2 Forward, 1 Back (Run over 2 gaps then go back one before going forward 2 again).
3) Players on completing the footwork courses sprint to the end cones.
4) Players jog back to the start to begin on the other side

Following an activity in the cones the players sprint (accelerate) through the yellow
cone. They then peel out (twist inside to turn) and jog or walk back to the start and then
perform the activity on the other side.

SCORING: None. KEY COACHING POINTS:

1. During the rest periods players are encouraged to do their own stretches or even
static stretches of the muscles groups being warmed at that time.
2. Players should be drinking water during warm ups also.

PROGRESSIONS:

1. None.

VARIATIONS:

1. None.

(3) Angled Finishing inside the 18yrd box

Drill Objective(s) Soccer Finishing and shooting soccer drills.

1. Finishing inside the 18yrd box.
2. Head and Volley technique.
3. Finishing Crosses.

 Drill No: SH2

 Age: 12-Adult
 No Players: 8+
 Difficulty: Medium
 Area/Time: 25x18yrds (20mins)

Diagram 1
ORGANISATION:
Mark out an area 25x18yrds, using the 18yrd box and a goal if one is available.
Four servers are positioned on the edges of the 18yrd box (penalty area). The
attackers line up on the edge of the penalty area facing the goal.
INSTRUCTIONS:
A1 and A2 run into the area and the coach calls out a server number. That number
then crosses a ball In for the two players running in to finish. One touch finishing
should be used. The players should get lots of opportunities to finish on goal with
volleys and headers also. A1 and A2 rotate to the back of the line after their turn.
Switch the servers every 5 minutes.

1. S1 plays a ball into the penalty area on the command of the coach.
2. A1 and A2 enter and attempt an angled finish. (Either as one team or
separate).
3. Shoot or head/volley in goal.

SCORING:
Every time you score that player or that players team gets a goal.

KEY COACHING POINTS:

1. Good driven shooting technique (Knee & Shoulder over ball, non-kicking
foot, etc.)
2. Correct technique for each attempt on goal.
3. Hit the target (force a save from the goal keeper).
4. Cross must eliminate the goal keeper.
5. Dont run in straight, curve your run.
6. Timing of the runs. Arrive as late as possible attacking the ball.
7. Angle of the run. Angle your run to get a better contact.
8. Make sure the two defenders have a split run, not in a flat line. One near
post and one back post.
9. Technique on arriving in, dont hit the ball to hard.
10. Postive attitude to finish, attack the ball.

PROGRESSIONS:
1. Different types of balls from the servers (bounced, aerial, rolling, etc)
2. Add in passive defenders to impede the attackers slightly.
3. Add in active defenders to challenge for the balls crossed in.

VARIATIONS:
1. Create a competition. The servers are neutral, but now there are two teams
(Yellow vs. Red). A1 and A2 now play for their coloured teams and run in
and fight to win the ball crossed in and they finish on the same goal. First
team to score 10 goals is the winner. Ball is dead only when it is out of the
18yrd area. This can be progressed to 2 vs. 2.

NOTES AND OBSERVATIONS:

Encourage players to finish first time if possible. Watch for rebounds!
4- Coach Developing Play from the Back 2

Drill Objective(s)

1. To train the ability to build up and play out from the back.
2. Maintain possession in the defensive third.

 Drill No: FUN5

 Age: 12-Adult
 No Players: 12 (10)
 Difficulty: Medium
 Area/Time: 30x15yrd Field (45x30yrd) (25mins)

Diagram 1

ORGANISATION:
Mark out Using a 30x15yrd area for the first part of this drill, arrange 4 players
playing out from the back (yellow) and 1 attacker (red) who is pressuring the ball.
The white coned line indicates the scoring line.

INSTRUCTIONS:
 The 4 defenders (yellow) attempt to keep possession of the ball (4vs1) and
score by running the ball over the opposite line. The line represents the
midfield area of the field. When the opportunity arises the defenders dribble
(run with the ball over the line).
 Set up a second area (shown in Diagram 2) for the other players on the team
performing the same drill in the opposite direction.

SCORING:
Score by dirbbling across the white line (defenders). Attackers score by dribbling
back over the end line (orange line).

KEY COACHING POINTS:

1. Spread out when in possession of the ball. The 2 outside defenders should go
as wide as possible.
2. The back 4 assumes a half moon shape.
3. Supporting angles should be good.
4. Communication between the defenders.
5. Placement of the passes in front of each other.
6. Look up to see if the ball can be dribbled forward.
7. Receive with an open body stance.

Diagrams below 2,3,4 – Progression to 2 Groups and to 4vs2 with goals.

PROGRESSIONS:

1. Change the number of defenders to increase the difficulty (depending on the

numbers you have available; 4vs2, 3vs1, 4vs3, etc). Refer to Diagram 3.

VARIATIONS
1. Add two goals and have the strikers who were originally just pressing and
pressurising combine with their own back 4 in attempts to score. A4 runs with
the ball into the other half or can dribble across and combine. Once the ball is
lost or a goal is scored he/she returns to their own half. Refer to Diagram 4.
2. With the same playing area, this time the ball must be passed across the half
way line. Once a successful pass is made into the forward, one other player
can step forward across the half way line to support in the attack. In Diagram
4, A1 (third man runner) steps forwrd to support. Once the ball is lost or a goal
is scored he/she returns to their own half.
3. The attacking player stays in the attacking half at all times. 2 defenders are
allowed to join him by either passing or dribbling over the half way line. 2
players hang back and offer support from behind.
4. Finally add another attacker to make this game 6vs6. The area may need to be
increased in length.

NOTES AND OBSERVATIONS:

Switch on to spread and attack. Positive runs from the player type involved. Recycle
runs if not played the ball. Patience to build the attack until a good opportunity arises
to play this type of pass.
5 - Attacking Corner

Set Piece Objective(s)

1. Exploit space at the back of the 6yrd box with a hanging cross for 3 players to
attack.

Diagram 1

ORGANISATION:
 3 takes the kick with either inswing or outswing.
 11 holds the edge of the area for rebounds and attempted clearances.

INSTRUCTIONS:
 3 takes the kick and looks to serve the ball to the back corner of the 6yrd
area.5, 9 will crash the centre of the 6yrd box. (Centre back).
 11 holds the eadge of the area for rebounds and attempted clearances.
 6,4,9 curve there runs starting inside the box close to the penalty spot, out the
box and then back in at a good open angle to finish agressive runs.
 7,10 make well timed decoy runs to clear the near post area if the ball falls
short for 5 to attack

KEY COACHING POINTS:

1. Encourage creativity at the corner. You cannot predict the defending teams
movements so imporvise where necessary.
2. 10 should be a good player, comfortable under pressure and who can make a
good decision.
3. 3 is generally left footed to delivery a good ball into the back post area.
4. Be Organized.
5. Know your job.
6. Know your start and end point of your run!
7. Attack Secondary ball and be agressive. Attack the ball.
8. Delivery must be good and to the right place.

VARIATIONS:
1. As shown above.
Combination

Crossing Drill

Drill Objective:

This combination crossing and finishing drill will focus on crosses within the 18 and is designed to help
players become comfortable on crosses inside the 18.

Drill Setup:

1. Split the team into 4 even groups.

2. Two of the groups form lines on the end line about 5 yards of the goal post on both side of the
goal.
3. The other two groups form lines about 30 yards out equal to the lines on the end line.
4. Set 2 sticks around the 18 yard box the same size as the goal equal to the goal and two sticks
near each sideline.
5. The balls will start at the top line.

Drill Instructions:

1. Two players from the line on the end line check in to the player with the ball.
2. The two checking players should be about 5-7 yards apart from each other when checking.
3. The top player plays the ball in towards the front checking player and sprints around the stick
on the sidelines closest to him.
4. The first checking player dummies the run by stepping over the ball and letting it run between
their legs.
5. The front player then sprints around the back stick and makes a run to the back post.
6. The back checking player plays a 1st time ball into the space of the outside stick for the top
player to cross on one touch and sprints around the closest stick and makes the front post run.
7. The outside player serves a first time ball into the box for the runners to finish on goal.
8. The player that makes the backpost run moves to the top line the back player goes back to the
line and becomes the front player, the player from the top goes to the back of the line on the
end line.
9. Perform the same movement with the players on the other side of the goal rotating each
combination.
Diamond Passing Combination

Drill Objective:

This soccer passing drill focuses on quick ball movement and combinations. Use this soccer combination
drill to clean up first touch and tight passing, or spread it out and work on long passing.

Drill Setup:

1. Set up 4 cones in the shape of an elongated diamond.

2. Assign an all time passer on each of the two cones where the points of the diamond are closest.
3. Rotate these passers every 3-5 minutes. In our diagram, the passers are in red.

Drill Instructions:

1. Have the first player in line pass to one of the passers and overlap them.
2. The passer that receives the first pass plays a first time ball into the other passer who then returns
the ball to the player overlapping.
3. The player then plays into the next player in line and the pattern repeats going the other
direction.

Drill Coaching Points:

 Focus on clean, crisp passing.

 Movement off the ball must be timed with the pass.
 The drill should flow with a continuous passing pattern.
 Focus on speeding up the combination play.

Drill Variations

 Play every pass 1-touch.

 Expand the distance between cones and play longer balls in the air.
