Cell- the basic structural unit of an organism

 All cells have three basic components: Cell

Membrane, Nucleus, Cytoplasm.
Cell Membrane
 Protects the cell
 It lets things in and out of the cell
 Location: around the cell
Nucleus
 Control center of the cell
 Location: inside the cell,
 near the center
Nucleolus (Nucleoli)
 Makes ribosomes
 Location: inside the nucleus (dark spot)
Nuclear Membrane
 Protects nucleus
 Lets things in/out of nucleus (pores)
 Location: around nucleus
Cytoplasm
 Gel-like substances, holds all organelles in cell
 Location: in cell

Organelles:
 very small size – can only be observed under
electron microscope
 has specific functions
 found in the cytoplasm
Mitochondria- Makes energy/powerhouse Plant Cells
Location: in cytoplasm  Plant cells are different from animal cells.
Golgi Bodies/Apparatus- Packages and secretes (gets  Plant cells contain many of the same organelles
rid of) waste you would find in an animal cell with the
Location: in cytoplasm exception of a few key players
Endoplasmic Reticulum (E.R.)- Transports materials and  (1) Cell Walls and (2) Chloroplasts are found in
sends messages to all parts of the cell plant cells and not animal cells.
 Two types: smooth and rough (has ribosomes) Cell Wall
 Location: attaches from cell membrane to nuclear  Cell Walls are only found in plant cells.
membrane  Cell walls a rigid structures made of cellulose
Ribosome- Makes proteins (basically wood).
Location: in cytoplasm or Attached to E.R.  Cell Walls perform the following:
Vacuole- Stores food and water  Protect the Cells
Location: in cytoplasm  Give the Cells a Strong Shape
Lysosome- Contains digestive enzymes  They provide support for the Cells
 Destroys bacteria, old cell parts…
 Location: in cytoplasm
Centrioles- Helps the cell to divide
Location: in cytoplasm
Chromatin/Chromosomes- Contains genetic
information/traits
Location: in nucleus
Cilia- Short hair-like projections Chloroplast
Used for movement  Chloroplast is essentially what makes a plant
Location: outside of cell cell a plant cell.
Flagella  Chloroplasts are filled with chlorophyll.
Long whip-like tail  Chlorophyll creates food from solar energy for
Used for movement the plants, it also give plants their usual green
 Animal Cells have similarities to plant cells, but color.
are different in a few ways. Plant Vacuoles
 Let’s look:  Plant Cells have one or two LARGE vacuoles.
These vacuoles many hold water for the cells.
 Animal cell vacuoles are numerous, small, and
contain water, food, and waste.
Conclusion
 All cells have a cell membrane, nucleus, and
cytoplasm.
 Plant Cells have: Chloroplasts, Cell Walls
 Both Plant and Animal cells have vacuoles,
however, Plant cells have VERY LARGE vacuoles,
while animal cells have many small vacuoles.
Animal cells
Can not make their own food so they have to
eat food
Do not go through photosynthesis
Animal cells are more round shaped
Animal cells have lysosomes
Animal cells can not make sugar
Animal cells use mitochondria to release energy
1. Animal cells do not have a cell wall
2. We are all made of animal cells
3. Animal cells do not have a large vacuole
5. F-They do not have chloroplast
Plant Cells
 Plant cells have a cell wall
 8. T- Plant cells have a large vacuole unlike the
animal cell
 Plant cells do not have mitochondria
 They also do not have lysosome’s
 7. F-Plant cells are in the shape of a rectangle
 Plant cells go through photosynthesis
 10. T- Plant cells have chloroplast
 Plant cells use chloroplast to store energy
 They also have cell membranes

Similarities of plant & animal cell

 4. They both have a nucleus
 9. They both have ribosome's that make protein
 Animal and plant cells both have Golgi bodies
 They both have cytoplasm
 6. They both have vacuoles that store food,
water and waste products.
