Last year Harry Grain worked for a big bank in the city of London. He had a great salary, a lovely house, and
drove an expensive car. Harry thought he had everything he wanted. But one day all that changed. Harry had
a heart attack. He was in hospital for five weeks. In fact, he nearly died. ‘I worked myself almost to death,’ said
Harry. ‘I was the person who always had to be the best, drive the fastest car and earn the biggest salary, but I
wasn’t happy. I was stressed all the time.’ When he left the hospital, Harry changed his life dramatically. He
left his job at the bank, bought a new, smaller house, and started work as a gardener. ‘I’ve always wanted to
work outside,’ he said. ‘Now I get much more exercise and I spend more time with my family. I live in a smaller
house. I realised I don’t have to always be the best. My life is much quieter and simpler now – and I’m much
happier.’
1. Harry didn’t earn a lot of money in his job at the bank. ___

Tuffley Primary School in Scotland has recently won the Green School of the Year award and £5,000. It
is the first school in Scotland to win this important prize. The school won the prize because last year
students decided to ‘go green’ and formed a group to do something to help the environment. All the
students in the school joined in. With their teachers’ help, younger students built a special garden to
protect birds and other wild animals. All the students in the school decided to walk or cycle to school.
‘The kids didn’t have to do this, but they really wanted to,’ said Moira Douglas, a mother of two
students at the school.
Some of the older students set up a small farm with some chickens. They grew their own vegetables
in the school garden and sold them to parents and local people. ‘The children have learnt so much
and have worked so hard,’ said Mr MacDougal, the head teacher at the school. ‘We are delighted with
this prize.’
‘We just want to help the planet,’ said Keely Williamson, aged 7. ‘Everybody can help.’
