Aim: To partition iodine between two immiscible solvents and to determine the partition coefficient.
Procedure: 1. Add 25 cm3 of the solution containing 12g dm–3 of iodine in methylbenzene to a separating
funnel.
2. Add 30 cm3 of distilled water to it and cover it with a cork.
3. Shake the contents vigorously and vent the separating funnel at regular intervals (5 seconds).
4. Allow settling.
5. Transfer the two layers into two separate conical flasks.
6. Add 10 cm3 of sulphuric acid to the aqueous layer.
7. Titrate against standard 0.01 mol dm–3 sodium thiosulphate solution until the orange colour
disappears.
8. Add four drops of starch indicator.
9. Continue the titration until the blue-black colour disappears. This is the end point of the titration.
10. Collect all methylbenzene solutions in a beaker for proper disposal.
11. Record all observations and results.
