This book is a complete annotated translation of a 9th-century

Tamil bhakti poetic work known as the Perumāḷ Tirumoḻi, by
Kulacēkara Āḻvār, as well as of its medieval Śrīvaiṣṇava
commentary in Sanskrit-Tamil Maṇipravāḷam by
Periyavāccāṉ Piḷḷai (13 c.). The Perumāḷ Tirumoḻi is now

part of the Tamil Śrīvaiṣṇava canon called the Nālāyira

tivviya pirapantam (Nālāyira Divyaprabandham, or ‘The
Four Thousand Divine Compositions’), and is composed of
ten decades dedicated to different forms of Viṣṇu. This book
also includes an introduction, which seeks to find out who
Kulacēkara Āḻvār really was, given his mysterious – and often
disputed – identity.

Tamil, poetry, bhakti, Vaiṣṇavism

Suganya Anandakichenin, a “professeur agrégé” in English, did her PhD in Indology at Hamburg
University, focusing on Tamil Vaiṣṇava bhakti poetry, especially on Kulacēkara Āḻvār’s. Since 2014,
she has worked as a research scholar in the Vaiṣṇava group of the NETamil project, based at the
EFEO in Pondicherry, specialising further in both Tamil bhakti poetry and medieval Śrīvaiṣṇava
Maṇipravāḷa writings, especially commentary literature.

Tirumoḻi, une œuvre poétique tamoule de la bhakti viṣṇuïte
composée par Kulacēkara Āḻvār (9e siècle ?), ainsi que de son
commentaire médiéval Śrīvaiṣṇava, composé par
Periyavāccāṉ Piḷḷai (13 siècle) en Maṇipravāḷam, une langue

mixte comprenant des éléments de sanskrit et de tamoul en

usage dans la tradition viṣṇuïte de l’Inde du Sud. Le Perumāḷ
Tirumoḻi fait aujourd’hui partie du canon Śrīvaiṣṇava, le
Nālāyira tivviya pirapantam (Nālāyira Divyaprabandham ou
« Les Quatre Mille Compositions Divines »), et est composé
de dix décades consacrées aux différentes formes de Viṣṇu.
Ce livre inclut également une introduction, où l’on discute
notamment de l’identité de Kulacēkara Āḻvār, objet de
nombreux débats et interrogations.

Suganya Anandakichenin, professeure agrégée d’anglais, a obtenu son doctorat en études indiennes
de l’université d’Hambourg, pour une thèse portant sur la poésie dévotionnelle (bhakti) tamoule
viṣṇuïte, notamment l’œuvre de Kulacēkara Āḻvār. Depuis 2014, elle est chargée de recherche au sein
du groupe d’études viṣṇuïtes du projet NETamil au centre de Pondichéry de l’EFEO. Elle se consacre
plus avant à la poésie de la bhakti tamoule, ainsi qu’à la littérature médiévale Śrīvaiṣṇava composée
en Maṇipravāḷa, en particulier aux commentaires sur le corpus dévotionnel tamoul ancien.
