1.4 Main Functions and Features

1. Hot Swappable
The rectifier is designed to be plug-and-play. There will be no arcing and
the terminals will not be damaged when inserting/removing the rectifier
from a live DC power system. A rectifier can be replaced in less than 1
minute and the inrush current will be no larger than 150% of the rated input
steady-state peak value.
When the rectifier is plugged into the system, the system output voltage
will not be affected.

2. Active Load Sharing

The rectifier uses advanced digital active load sharing technology that
maintains balancing to within±1.5 A.

3. Power Derating Based on Input Voltage

The rectifier power varies with changes in input voltage and output voltage.
It uses an advanced power limitation method. The rectifier can provide its
maximum rated power (3200 W) as long as the input voltage is within the
range of 176 Vac to 290 Vac (hysteresis is less than 3V). Below 176 Vac,
and down to 85 Vac, the rectifier will continue to operate normally but will
be in a power derating mode. The relationship between the output power
and input voltage is illustrated in Figure 1-8.

As you can see from Figure 1-9 and Table 1-4, the following output
characteristics are exhibited:
• When rectifier output voltage ranges from 48 V to 58 V, the
maximum output power is 3200W.
• When rectifier output voltage is less than 48V, the maximum output
current remains at 66.6A.
• When the output voltage is 58V, the maximum output current is
55.2A.
• When the load exceeds 3200 W, the rectifier will limit its output
current to keep its output power constant.

12 Rectifier Description

5. Power Derating Based on Temperature

The rectifier delivers full power when operating at an ambient temperature
of 45°C or below. Some power rating values for higher temperatures would
be as follows:
• At an ambient temperature of 65°C, the power delivered by the
rectifier is greater than 2320 W.
• At an ambient temperature of 70°C, the power delivered by the
rectifier is greater than 1450W.
Refer to Figure 1-10 to view the relationship between the output power and
the ambient temperature.

6. Current Limit Function

The rectifier has current limit function. The current limit point can be set
between the range of 5.5 to 66.6A. The setting is done using the CSU.
The current limit accuracy is ≤±1.5A when the output voltage ranges from
42 to 58.5 V, and ± 3A for output voltages ranges from 30 to 42 V, ± 5A for
output voltages below 30V.

R48-3200 Rectifier User Manual

Rectifier Description 13

7. Adjustable Output Voltage

The output voltage can be set through the CSU within the range of 42 V to
58V. The accuracy is ±0.1V.

8. Fan Control
When the input voltage is within a normal range, the built-in processor
adjusts the fan’s speed according to the rectifier’s internal temperature.
For example, a higher temperature will increase the fan speed. Above
40°C, the fan will be operating at full speed.
When the internal temperature sample value is less than 10°C, the fan will
be shut down. The temperature hysteresis is 5°C.
When the input voltage is abnormal, such as very low or high input voltage,
the fan will turn off

9. Input Over/Under Voltage Protection

The rectifier will shut down and its protection indicator (yellow) will light up
when the input voltage is lower than 85Vac or higher than 290Vac. This
condition will be reported to the CSU and the CSU will process the alarms
accordingly.
10. Output Over Voltage Protection (HVSD)
There are two kinds of HVSD:
a. The fixed hardware HVSD is 59.5V(within the range of 58.5 to 60V), In
case of hardware HVSD, the rectifier has to be restarted manually.
b. The software HVSD is settable, its level (from controller) is from 56V to
59V.
The rectifier will shut down when its output voltage is higher than HVSD
set point. Note that the HVSD set point can be modified through the CSU
and the permissible range is from 56 V to 59 V. The occurrence of a HVSD
condition will cause the rectifier’s alarm indicator (red) to light up. The
failure information will be reported to the CSU and the CSU will process
the failure accordingly. Note also that the rectifier can only be restarted
manually should a HVSD condition occur twice within a 5 minute interval.

R48-3200 Rectifier User Manual

14 Rectifier Description

The rectifier also has two additional software settings that can be
configured using the CSU:
1) Manual restart, and
2) Automatic restart attempt within 5 seconds of a HVSD condition.

11. High Temperature Protection

The rectifier will limit its power to 50% of the rated output capacity when its
internal temperature becomes higher than 90°C. The causes for the high
temperature condition may be that the ventilation openings are obstructed,
the ambient temperature is too high, or the rectifier fan has failed.
The rectifier will shut down and its protection indicator (yellow) will light up
when its internal temperature reaches 95°C.
The failure information will be reported to the CSU and the CSU will
process the failure accordingly. The high temperature alarm will clear and
the rectifier restored to normal operation when its internal temperature
returns to normal values (hysteresis is between 5 to10°C).

12 PFC Over/Under Voltage

The rectifier will shut down when its bus voltage is higher than the over
voltage set point or is lower than the under voltage set point. During such
conditions, the rectifier does not output any power and its protection
indicator (yellow) will light up.

13 Communication Failure
The rectifier’s protection indicator (yellow) will flash should it experience a
communication failure. The failure information will be reported to the CSU
and the CSU will process the failure accordingly. During a communication
failure, in order to protect the battery, the rectifier output voltage will
automatically adjust to 53.5 V (this is a default value which can be
modified using the CSU). The rectifier will revert to normal operation once
normal communication is restored.

R48-3200 Rectifier User Manual

Rectifier Description 15

14. Fan Fault Protection

An alarm will be generated upon a fan fault. In such cases, the fault
indicator (red) on the rectifier front panel will flash and the rectifier will also
inhibit its output.
Auto-recovery is enabled upon the clearing of the corresponding fault.

15. Unbalance of Rectifier Output Current

When the output current of the rectifiers in a DC power system is
unbalanced, the rectifier whose output current is unbalanced will be
identified automatically and its protection indicator (yellow) will light up.
The failure information will be reported to the CSU and the CSU will
process the failure accordingly.

16. Monitoring Function

The rectifier has a built-in advanced DSP that monitors and controls the
operation of the rectifier. The DSP also communicates with the CSU in real
time through the CAN bus. Table 1-5 lists the different commands and
information exchanged between the rectifier and the CSU.

3.2 Unbalanced Current Sharing

When multiple rectifiers are operating in parallel and the current sharing
unbalance among them is greater than 3%, check if the communication
cables are correctly connected.
If the current sharing unbalance still persists following the verification
suggested above, then replace the rectifier which has had its current
sharing function disabled.

3.3 Fan Replacement

The fan can be replaced should it have stopped functioning due to some
fault. The fan assembly is shown in Figure 3-1.
Follow the procedure below to replace the fan:
1. Loosen the 3 screws on the baffle (rectifier front cover) and remove the
baffle.
2. Unplug the power cable of the fan and remove the fan.
3. Place the new fan in the space vacated by the old fan.
4. Plug the fan power cable back into the corresponding socket. Push
back the fan (the side with the tag facing inward). Position the front
baffle back into place and fix it with the screws removed in step 1.
