In “Mother Tongue” Chinese-American writer Amy Tan writes about the difference
between the standard English she learned in school and the “broken” English her
mother spoke at home. Tan explores the effects of growing up with many “Englishes”
and persuades us with wit and insight that language, for better or worse,
shapes us and the world we live in.
