F14 Tomcat

Year 7
Fuselage

Get a pre-cut piece of pine

wood (19mm x 19mm) from
the trolley.
Use a Try-Square to help
draw a line with a pencil on
all 4 sides of the wood
at the 50mm mark you just
made.

Remember to use the thumb

and 2 fingers method to
make sure your Try-Square in
held securely to give a true
square line.
1.Use your pencil and ruler to
carefully draw a line from corner
to corner on the end of the wood
closest to the 50mm line
2.Find the mid point and draw 2
lines to create the cross.
3.Your project should like this
picture on the left
1. Using the mark you
made in the previous step,
mark on the face where
centre is with your pencil

2. Using a ruler and pencil draw a straight

line from each of these 2 points to the
centre point you have marked in the
previous step

3. Repeat these steps on the

opposite side (back of wood)
Preparing to Saw
Place the wood into
a vice so the line
you have marked is
vertical.

Use a try-square
resting on a flat
service of the vice
to make sure the
line is vertical
1. Use a Tenon Saw to cut
down the line.

2. Don’t cut on the line,

cut 1 – 1.5 mm beside
the line.

3. Note the pistol grip for

sawing.
Make very smooth
strokes otherwise
you will split your
wood when
nearing the edge

Note the cut is 1-

1.5mm away from
the line
Check on the
back side
regularly that
you are
cutting down
the line
straight and
not off centre
This is how your project should
look after sawing the first section
off.

Note that you can clearly see the

line. You must be able to see the
line on both front and back.
Move your project so the
other line to cut is vertical.

Use a try-square to make

sure it is as close to vertical
as possible.

Repeat previous steps to

cut this line, making sure
you are 1-1.5mm away
from the line.
Your project should
look like this, once both
sides are cut.

Time to sand on the

disc sander.

Don’t forget your safety

glasses and
make sure you sand on
the left hand side to
avoid injury.
Sand your project to the lines.
Make sure the wood is laid flat
on the metal plate.

Outside of the sanding disc

sands quicker than the middle.
Use the middle of the disc to
finish the sanding when close to
the line to avoid over sanding.
1. Use a ruler and pencil to
mark the centre (half of
19mm).

2. Then use a ruler to draw a

line from each side of the
50mm line to the centre point
you just made.
Repeat the process of cutting these
lines 1-1.5mm away from the line
while in a vice.
Then sand to the
line on the disc
sander.

Remember Safety
Glasses.
Your project should now
look like this.

The fuselage is now

complete.
Engines
You will need 2 pieces of pine for the
engines.
It is pre-cut on trolley.

Use a ruler and pencil to draw a

shape similar to the one pictured
here.

These pieces maybe too long, but

DO NOT cut them to length yet.
Once again, place the engine
piece into a vice with the line
you are cutting aligned with
the vertical.

Carefully cut inside the line and

cut down to where the 2 lines
join
Position the wood to be able
cut the other line on the
vertical axis.

Make sure to cut inside the

line to avoid mistakes.
Using a 3 side file
(triangular shape)
File the area you have
just cut, down to the
line.
Focus on making it as
flat, even and as
smooth as possible.
Using the piece you have just
cut and filed to shape, trace
the shape onto your second
piece and repeat the process
of sawing and filing to
replicate the second engine
Congratulations, you now
have your fuselage and 2
engines completed.

You can now cut the engines

to length to fit along side
your fuselage.

Remember to use a try-

square to get a square line to
cut.
Large Wings

One piece of MDF will be pre cut on the

trolley.

Use a ruler and measure from one end to

the 130mm, mark with a pencil.

Use a try-square to draw a straight line at

the 130mm mark.
Use a bench hook and
Tenon saw to cut the line
you have just marked at
130mm.

Remember to use a pistol

grip while sawing.
Make sure you have the square edge
at top and the line you drew at
130mm at the bottom clearly
visible.

1.Use a ruler and pencil to measure

and mark 15mm in from the top
right corner.

2.Use a ruler and pencil to measure

and mark 35mm in from the top
left corner
1. Use a ruler and pencil to draw a line from
the 15mm mark to the bottom right corner.

2. Use a ruler and pencil to draw a line from

35mm mark to the bottom left corner.

3. Use a ruler and pencil to measure up the

line from the bottom left corner to the
43mm mark.

4. Use a ruler and pencil to draw a line from

the 43mm point to the bottom right corner.
On the second piece of
MDF, measure and draw a
line at 130mm.

Repeat the same process

of measuring and drawing
the lines for the second
wing.
Use a bench hook and
Tenon saw to cut the wings
that you have just marked
out.

Do not cut on the line but 1-

1.5mm on the outside of
the line.

Remember to use a pistol

grip while sawing.
Carefully use the disc
sander to sand to the
line on each side of
the two wings.
6mm 10mm Replicate these
measurements on 2
of the smaller pre-cut
pieces of MDF.

30mm Cut both pieces in

half with a Tenon saw
10mm
on a bench hook.

Carefully sand to the

lines on the disc
sander
You should now have 2 of each
type of tail wings pictured
here.
Congratulations

Now you have all your pieces

prepared and are ready for
assembly.
