COOPERATIVE INSTRUCTION LESSON PLAN

1 Describe the Class

It is an 8th Math class with a total of 30 students, 17 girls, and 13 are boys. None of the students are
disabled, and 2 of my girls are Spanish speaking students.

2 Subject/Skills

Math/Using the FOIL method to simplify a squared binomial.

3 Objectives

Students will learn to use the FOIL method to simplify a squared binomial by listening to instruction,
and through guided practice, until they can successfully solve 90% of the problems during 30 minutes
of classroom independent practice.

4 Procedures

*Prerequisites- Students have already mastered from previous lessons the distributive property, the
multiplication tables, and are familiar with binomials.

*Modeling- Teacher will explain the main concept on the black board. Will demonstrate how to use
foil simplification to the whole class. Then will have students work in heterogeneous groups to solve
problems while teacher will provide assistance as needed. Interdependence will be promoted, since
every student in the group must learn to use the FOIL method. After that, will have students come to
the black board and work on problems that the whole class will assist in completing. Throughout the
week we will work on using the FOIL method until students are comfortable going on the website Alec
and practicing independently.

*Conducted learning probes/guided practice- Students will come to the front of the class and work in
sets of two at a time in using FOIL, while teacher will ask the class to assist. Students will get assisted
practice at their desks also. To check students understanding teacher will ask students if they have any
questions while explaining concepts, and while assisting students at the board. Also, teacher will hand
out a quiz at the end of the week.

* Independent student practice- Children will have assisted practice until they reach autonomy in
practicing the FOIL method. They will go on the website ALEC to practice independently.

5 Materials

Textbooks, black board, notebooks and laptops to practice online while in class.

6 Grouping Structures
Lesson will happen in the classroom, for a group of 30 students.

7 Modifications

For the Spanish speaking students, teacher will instruct them in Spanish (since I am bilingual). For
students with Math disability I would have them sit on the front rows, provide assistance explaining
concepts one on one when the class is doing guided practice at their desks, and would have them try a
turn at the black board solving problems along with the class. Would send them home with very easy
binomials to use FOIL on until they are ready for more difficult ones. Would monitor their development
closely. For gifted students would send them home with more challenging binomials to FOIL.

8 Assessment-

Will work on this chapter the whole week. Homework will tell me how they are doing and what they
need support on. Students will work on the laptops in class throughout the week to obtain autonomy. At
the end of the week there will be a quiz to measure student’s proficiency.
