VLSI DESIGN

Course Objectives:
This course will help the learner to
 Understand MOS transistors, CMOS logic and different CMOS technologies
 Characterize the CMOS circuits using power and speed
 Develop combinational and sequential circuits using CMOS logic.

UNIT - I 15 hours
MOS Transistor Theory and CMOS Logic
MOS transistor, CMOS logic, Design partitioning, A simple MIPS Microprocesor, Logic design,
Circuit design, Physical design, Design verification, Fabrication, packaging and testing.
MOS transistor theory - Introduction- Long channel I-V characteristics - C-V characteristics -
Non ideal I-V effects - DC transfer characteristics.

UNIT - II 15 hours
Circuit Characterization and Scaling
Interconnect modelling, Interconnect Impact, Interconnect Engineering, Delay - Transient
response - RC delay model - Linear delay model, Power - Sources of power dissipation, dynamic
power, static power, energy delay optimization,Scaling - Transistor scaling- Interconnect scaling.

UNIT – III 15 hours


Combinational and Sequential Circuit Design
Circuit families - Static CMOS, Ratioed Circuits, Cascode Voltage Switch logic, Dynamic Circuits,
Pass transistor circuits. Silicon On Insulator design, Sub-threshold circuit design, Circuit Pitfalls.
Sequential Circuit Design – Sequencing Static Circuits - Circuit design of Latches and flip flops –
Static Sequencing Element Methodology.

UNIT - IV 15 hours
Circuit Simulation and CMOS Processing Technology
SPICE Tutorial, Device Models, Device Characterization, Circuit Characterization
CMOS fabrication and layout – Inverter cross section - Fabrication process - Gate layout - Stick
diagram, CMOS technologies, Layout design rules, CMOS process enhancements, Technology
related CAD issues, Manufacturing issues

 Draw the stick diagram and layout of different AOI logic
 Estimate the area of compound gates
 Design the combinational and sequential circuit using different circuit families
 Analyze the IC design in terms of delay, area and power
