Problem 1

100 gallons/min of wastewater is highly acidic and requires neutralization prior to

secondary treatment. This flow is to be neutralized to a pH of 7 by lime. Titration is
done in 2 steps , the total lime used to neutralize the wastewater is 4000 mg/l. The first
step requires 2250 mg/l . Determine the amount of lime required in each step lb/day .

Problem 2

200 GPM of wastewater is highly alkaline and requires neutralization prior discharge.
This flow is to be neutralized to a pH of 4 by sulphuric acid. The total acid used to
neutralize the wastewater is 3000 mg/l. In first step pH shifts to 8 by using 2200mg/l of
acid.

a) Determine the concentration of sulphuric acid required in second step to shift the
pH to 4.
b) Determine the amount of acid required in each step in lb/day .
c) Determine the total amount of acid used on annual basis

Problem 3: Acid wastes neutralization through limestone beds.

A wastewater flow of 100 gallons/min with 0.1N H2SO4 required neutralization prior to
secondary treatment. This flow is to be neutralized to a pH of 7 using limestone bed.
Figure below presented the results of a series of laboratory pilot tests using 1 foot
diameter limestone bed. Assume limestone is 60 percent reactive.

a) Determine the most economical depth of limestone

b) weight of acid per day to be neutralized

c) limestone requirements on an annual basis

Problem 4 : Acid wastes neutralization through limestone beds.

A wastewater flow of 200 gallons/min with 0.2N HCL required neutralization prior to
secondary treatment. Calculate

(a) weight of acid required on annual basis

(b) limestone requirements on an annual basis

Problem 5

100 gallons/min of wastewater is highly acidic and requires neutralization prior to

secondary treatment. This flow is to be neutralized to a pH of 7 by lime. Titration are
shown inn figure from which a 2 stage neutralization system will be used with the total
lime consumption of 2250 mg/l. The first stage requires 2000 mg/l and the second stage
250 mg/l.

(a) Determine the amount of lime required in lb/day.

(b) Also determine the size of neutralization tank. Assume detention time 5 min
