ADVOCACY LESSON PLAN

Audience: 8th Grade Time: 90 minutes

Objective (s): By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:

- define advocacy

- develop solutions to issues faced daily around our school

-complete a questionnaire for a job interview at a recycling company as to why you should be hired

Materials: LCD and projector, pens/pencils

Engage:

Warm up:

Students will respond to the following question:

What is self-advocacy?

Students will share responses on sticky notes added to board.

Explore

Exploring Advocacy:

Students will follow along with my PowerPoint about advocacy while taking notes to define what
advocacy is, how to advocate and reasons why it is important.

Explain:

Students will be divided into groups of 3-4. Each group will have to brainstorm creative ways to solve
problems in scenarios given to each group.

 Students will the issue

Extend:

Students will participate in a class discussion for each scenario.


 Students will identify the issue
 Explain why or why not they believe the solution each group create properly displayed
advocacy. (If students do not agree they share out why and a new solution to the issue)

Evaluate:

Students are introduced to the following scenario:

Due to the high pollution and poor air quality in your neighborhood, your neighborhood committee
petitioned for a change to happen. Mayor Catherine Pugh received the petition and had to act. After
many months of fundraising, she received funding to open a new recycling plant in your neighborhood
in efforts to reduce pollution. The opening of the recycling company brought more jobs to your
community. The recycling company is offering intern jobs to students at Montebello to help students
receive their community service hours. Your mom tells you that you must get a job at the new recycling
plant in order to earn your service learning hours. Before you can get the job, you must complete the
following questionnaire:

In order to know how you can be a great addition to my team, I would like you to develop a list of
strengths and abilities in all your areas of life. Would you please answer the following questions about
yourself?
