ABSTRACT The aviation industry is implementing revolutionary technologies to improve efficiency on fuel, weight,
speed, safety, maintenance and comfort. In this aspect this paper studies the implementation of Wireless sensor
nodes to reduce the weight of aircraft by reducing the wired connections into wireless communication channels. Fly
by Wire to Fly by Wireless is the new concept to be implemented. Microelectromechanical system is the technology
of microscopic devices, particularly those with moving parts. MEMS are made up of components between 1 and 100
micrometers and generally range in size from 20 micrometers to a millimeter. Networking of various electro
mechanical control systems using electrical, pneumatic and hydraulic power which guide the aircraft is analyzed
and certain suitable conclusions drawn for implementation of WSNs. Some systems included are Aircraft Strength
Testing(AST), Wireless Engine Monitoring systems(WEMS), Aircraft Cabin Condition Monitoring systems in this study.
These enhance capabilities both on reliability, flexibility and redundancy of operations with increase in ease of
maintenance. Access to critical locations for trouble-shooting and condition monitoring of aircraft is the main
purpose of this implementation. Various research studies carried out worldwide and their conclusions analyzed are
included in this study. Keywords: MEMS, WSN, Aircraft Strength Testing(AST), Wireless Engine Monitoring
systems(WEMS), Aircraft Cabin Condition Monitoring systems, Fly by Wire, Fly by Wireless
