ABSTRACT

THE CORRELATION BETWEEN FAMILY MEMBER SMOKING


BEHAVIOR WITH INCIDENCE OF UPPER RESPIRATORY TRACT
INFECTION IN CHILDREN (1 TO 5 YEARS OLD)

Children who exposed to cigarette smoke are at risk of suffering from upper
respiratory tract infection. The objective of this study was to determine the
correlation of family member smoking behavior with incidence of upper
respiratory tract infection in children (1 to 5 years old).
This research used Non Experimental design, with Cross Sectional approach.
Sample was taken fom populations that met inclusion and axclusion criterias.
Total of 70 children were recruited in November to Desember 2012. The
independent variable in this study was family member smoking behavior and
dependent variable was incidence of upper respiratory tract infection in children
(1 to 5 years old). The sampling technique was Purposive Sampling. Data were
collected using questionnare and medical records. Data were analized by
Crosstabs.
The result showed that there was a correlation between family member
smoking behavior with incidence of upper respiratory tract infection in children (1
to 5 years old).
It can be concluded that family member smoking behavior put children at risk
of suffer from upper respiratory tract infection. Thus parents or family members
should not smoke near children. Nurse need to conduct health education about
smoking to families. Further research is needed to identified other factors related
to incidence of upper respiratory tract infection in children, such a nutrition and
other environmental factors.
