Solving Systems of Linear Equations Review

Lesson Plan Framework and Rubric

Name: Glynnis Harley

Date: November 9, 2018
School: Alton High School

Part 1: Learning Plan

Subject: Geometry

Topic: Solving Systems of Linear Equations

State/Common Core Standard: Interpret the equation y = mx + b as defining a linear

function.

National/ Professional Standard: N/A

Local Curriculum Expectation/Objective: Students will be able to graph a linear equation in

addition to identifying slope, intercepts, and both forms of the linear equation.

Lesson Learning Targets:

Students will be able to graph a linear equation in addition to identifying slope, intercepts, and
both forms (standard and slope intercept) of the linear equation.

Assessment Plan:
Summative Assessment: Worksheet
Formative assessment: Share outs during the lesson, example problems that we do throughout,
kahoot at the end
Part 2: Instructional Planning

● Introduction ( 3 min)
○ Warm- up question posted on board
○ Give students 2 minutes or so to try warm up
○ I will walk through the problem and model it for them as they follow along on
their own warmup sheets.
● Reviewing systems of equations and graphing (30 minutes)
○ Define key terms:
■ Slope
■ Slope intercept form
■ Standard form
■ X and y intercepts
○ Go through the examples that students have in their workbooks and walk them
through problems -- ask guided questions along the way
■ identify slope and y intercept in an equation that is in slope intercept form
■ write an equation in slope intercept form
■ switch between slope intercept and standard form
■ identify intercepts on a graph
■ PEMDAS
■ zero and undefined slope
■ graph positive and negative lines
■ Review algebra skills as needed
● Kahoot (10 minutes)
○ Play a game of Kahoot to review the lesson that was just taught about graphing
and slopes.
○ Fun and engaging for students
○ Utilizes technology

● Independent work time (12 min)

○ Hand out worksheets
○ Walk around and help students when they have questions

Also plan how you will do the following:

● Materials
○ Students will need their workbooks
○ Handouts – worksheets
○ Power point

● Differentiate instruction to meet learning needs

○ Powerpoint to support visual learners
○ I will explain what I am doing on the board for auditory learners
○ Kahoot is a more hands-on activity- helps engage students in a “fun” and different
way
○ I will walk around during independent work time to give students who need 1-1
attention the opportunity to ask questions

● How you will engage all students to be thinking & processing important ideas
○ Constantly asking questions that the students can answer throughout the lesson so
that they have a chance to participate as I teach
● Effective questioning and direction giving that activates thinking and engagement
○ The warm up exercise is supposed to activate schema and activate prior
knowledge
○ Asking students questions as I am teaching the lesson, so rather than just writing
up answers the students have an opportunity to engage with the material
○ Scaffolding- allowing students to try warm up, going over it together, teaching
lesson, and then giving students the chance to work on their new assignments
independently

● Transition and management strategies

○ Have allotted amounts of time for each part of the lesson, constantly be checking
time to make sure I am on track
○ Be flexible—if one part of the lesson takes longer, cut out work time in the end
because students questions and understanding are more important during class
○ Walk around the room and be available for students to ask questions during
independent work time
