Presentation Debrief

1. What was the purpose of the presentation?

2. Compact all the content of the presentation into one thesis statement. Make it as
strong as possible.

3. What are the main reasons given in support of the thesis statement. Aim for
three or four

4. Is there a counter argument presented? If so, what was it?

5. Describe ways the presenter used ethos, logos, and pathos? Which of these
modes of persuasion did you find effective?

6. Would you be interested in learning more about this topic or any of the subtopics?
If so, what?
Presentation notes:

Ethos - Worked as a park ranger - gave a lot of presentations on environmental issues.

Logos - All kinds of statistics - A is causing B, B is bad, thus A is bad.

Pathos - The first video - other images of factory farming process.

SAD diet - Are these things really killing us?

Background information: Discussing high animal product diet and define factory farming
and it’s business strategy.

Sources : Food and agricultural organization of the United Nations.

1st video was mainly sourced from industry training videos and a little bit
of undercover footage.
JimMason.com - image of chicken poop - can’t find this website?
Cattle industry websites - 70%
Yann Arthus-Bertrand
World Watch institute
US Department of Agriculture
World Resources Institute 2008 - map of Eutrophication and hypoxic zones

Reasons against:
1. Cruelty to animals
2. Antibiotic resistance - super bugs - and antibiotics in environment(what are the
consequences of this?)
3. Diseases that can cross the species barrier or sicken humans
4. Disparate impact on communities of color - video from non profit
5. Uses a large amount of resources - water, food (rainforest - which causes higher
levels of CO2 and extinction), land - could be more efficient way to feed people
6. Soil degradation due to monocropping (Is this only to feed animals? Or to feed
humans as well?) and use of pesticide and herbicides.
7. Climate change - Methane from ag animals is a very large part of the greenhouse
gases causing climate change.
8. Ocean Depletion - About the fishing industry - seems slightly off topic -
overfishing could lead to extinction

Counterargument: Labels of free range, cage free, grass fed, organic lead people to feel
like the products are sourced in a natural and humane way.
Rebuttal: These labels are misleading

Bandwagon: List of famous people who no longer use animal products
