ABSTRACT
India has an approximate road network of over 4 million kilometers. These roads are a mix of
modern highways and narrow, unpaved roads, and are undergoing drastic improvement (in terms
of widening and strengthening).India has changed with major efforts to modernize country’s
road infrastructure particularly NHs and village roads (PMGSY). Road Transportation is vital to
India’s economy. It enables the country’s transportation sector to contribute more than 4 percent
of India’s gross domestic product, in comparison to railways that contribute nearly 1 percent.
Bitumen and cement are used as binder in road construction in the country. In general, roads in
India are primarily bitumen based macadamized roads. However, a few of the National
Highways have been constructed using concrete.
In the construction of cement concrete roads materials like cement, sand, aggregates are
generally used. The process consists of Preparation of Sub Grade, Placing of Forms, Batching
and Mixing of Materials, Transporting and Placing of Concrete, Compaction and Finishing and
Curing of Concrete.
Concrete roads requires less maintenance which leads to fewer traffic delays. Using concrete as a
material for construction will result in less fuel consumption, and a decrease in associated
emissions.
Unlike asphalt roads, concrete roads do not get damaged by the leaking oils from the vehicles or
by the extreme weather conditions like excess rain or extreme heat. Also if a vehicle run over a
concrete road, consumes 25-20% less fuel than that on asphalt roads. This is because of the fact
that a concrete road does not get deflected under the wheels of loaded trucks. Lastly concrete
contributes in saving of natural resources because concrete (cement) is produced from
abundantly available limestone.
