Lesson Idea Name: Living vs. Non-living

(alive and not alive) and non-living objects are grouped. a. Construct an explanation based on observations to
recognize the differences between organisms and nonliving objects.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

This lesson incorporates different learning styles through the visual and auditory aspects of the video. This
lesson also supports collaboration as the students work together as a class to decide whether it is a living or
non-living thing.

Lesson idea implementation:

This lesson focuses on teaching students about living vs. non living things. They will learn about the
characteristics of a living thing, and use that knowledge to make logical decisions about pictures from the
video. The lesson will first be introduced by asking the students if they can tell me what is a living thing and
what is a non-living thing. That will activate their background knowledge and prepare them for the lesson.
They will then watch a video describing the differences between a living and non-living thing. The video
includes a short activity where the students will work together as a class to decide whether or not they are
looking at a living or non-living thing. The students will also be required to justify their reasoning using the
characteristics of living and non-living things.

The students will be assessed on their reasoning and how well they work together as a class. They will receive
immediate feedback as they are making their decision. The students will be observed as they are viewing the
video and as they are working together. This is an introductory lesson into organisms and how they are
grouped.

Importance of technology:
The video created by the teacher, allows the teacher to ensure that the video is meeting the needs of the
student. The lesson could be completed without this technology, but it would take longer and not be as
interactive and engaging for the students. The video software will be used along with an interactive
whiteboard or projector.

Internet Safety and Student Privacy:

The video included in the lesson was downloaded from Discovery Education, a safe and pre-approved
educational website. The iMovie was created by the teacher and will not be uploaded to any website and is
only for classroom use.

Reflective Practice:
I think that this is a great introductory lesson for students that can be extended as a project for students.
Students can create their own iMovie or work together in groups to create a project on living and non-living
things. There are also more interactive activities on the internet that students can use to help further their
understanding.
