A disputes between Canada and Saudi Arabia began with a tweet that escalated into

conflict and severed political relations between the two countries. On August 3rd ,
Canada’s foreign ministry weighed in, writing on Twitter that Saudi Arabia should
“immediately release” Badawi and “all other peaceful #humanrights activists.” Raif
Badawi has been arrested since 2012 for “insulting Islam.” His wife and children were
made Canadian citizens this year. After the tweet, Saudi Arabia froze new trade with
Canada, blocked grain imports, expelled Canada’s ambassador and ordered
all Saudi students home after Ottawa called for the release of activists detained for urging
more rights for women. Canada's Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, said that Canada has
been and will continue to strive for human rights enforcement in Saudi Arabia. Trudeau
said Canada had been involved in significant diplomatic efforts on human rights with
Saudi Arabia for years, including in its own conversation last spring with King Salman
bin Abdulaziz Al Saud.

Freedom of expression is one of the biggest human rights issues that occur in Saudi
Arabia. Apart from the case of Raif Badrawi, there is a case about the disappearance of a
journalist named Jamal Khashoggi. Multiple reports suggest Khashoggi, a Washington
Post columnist who lived in the U.S., was murdered and dismembered inside the Saudi
consulate in Istanbul. CNN reported today that Turkish authorities say they have audio
and visual evidence showing he was killed just over a week ago, according to a Western
intelligence agency familiar with the investigation. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau he has
"serious issues" about the case of Jamal Khashoggi.

Currently in Indonesia, although not as extreme as in Saudi Arabia, there are concerns
regarding the rights of freedom of expression. The rights of freedom of expression in
Indonesia, has actually been guaranteed in the 1945 Constitution article 28E paragraph
(3) which states that, "Everyone has the right to freedom of association, assembly and
issue of opinion". But lately there are cases that seem to raise doubts regarding the
guarantee of the rights of freedom of expression in Indonesia. One case that concerns
freedom of expression in Indonesia is the case of the dissolution of screenings that show
the story of Hesri Setiawan, a political prisoner in Buru Island which happened quite a
long time ago, namely in 2016. Sadly, the dissolution occurred when the screening of the
film was carried out in the context of World Press Freedom Day. Apart from the
dissolution cases , there were 39 cases of violence against journalists occurring in
Indonesia over the past year. According to Reporters Without Borders, the freedom of the
press in Indonesia is on the tip because it ranks 130th out of 180 countries with a score of
only 41.72. Another issue of freedom of the press which is in the spotlight is access to
foreign media to cover Papua. However, this shows that the enforcement of freedom of
expression in Indonesia still needs to be strengthened
