Lesson Plan Guide

Teacher Candidate: Kaitlynn Geddings Date: December 2, 2018

Grade and Topic: 3rd grade Science Length of Lesson: 45 – 60 minutes
Mentor Teacher: Cornelius School: U of Memphis

UNIT/CHAPTER OBJECTIVE/GENERALIZATION/BIG IDEA:

In this learning segment, (TLW) list the properties of solids, liquids, and gases then display this information in a
table. This lesson builds on their prior knowledge of being able to simply list the different states of matter. This
is an important skill because it teaches students to thoroughly analyze the distinction between the different
states of matter. The lesson builds clear and consistent connections by causing students to focus on the states of
matter and the tiny particles that make them up. The purpose of this learning segment is for students to build on
their prior knowledge of solids, liquids, and gases.
LESSON OBJECTIVE:
● Using the internet, students will fill out a worksheet which states the three states of matter and their
properties. The students will then create a table in Microsoft Word to display this information with 100%
accuracy.
● The student is expected to research the properties of solids, liquids, and gases. The student is also
expected to research how matter is made of billions of particles too tiny to see.

STANDARDS ADDRESSED:
● 3.PS1: Matter and Its Interactions.
1.) Describe the properties of solids, liquids, and gases and identify that matter is made up of particles
too small to be seen.
● ISTE 3. Research and Information Fluency: Students apply digital tools to gather, evaluate, and use
information.
b. Locate, organize, analyze, evaluate, synthesize, and ethically use information from a variety of
sources.

MATERIALS:
● States of Matter Worksheet
● Laptops
● Microsoft Word (for table)
● Pencil
● Internet Access to
● What is matter: http://www.chem4kids.com/files/matter_intro.html
● What is a solid: https://www.thoughtco.com/definition-of-solid-604648
● What is a liquid: https://www.chemicool.com/definition/liquid.html
● What is a gas: http://www.scienceforkidsclub.com/gas-facts.html

● Students will use the listed websites as resources to answer the questions within the worksheet.

BACKGROUND and RATIONALE:

●What are the properties of solids, liquids, and gases?
●Academic Language is not addressed in IDT 3600.
●This lesson builds clear and consistent connections by causing students to focus on the states of matter
and the tiny particles that make them up.
● I am aware that the lesson will be differentiated for students who did not master the objectives and for
those ready for enrichment. However, modifications are not covered in this course and are not part of
this particular lesson.
PROCEDURES AND TIMELINE:
 Introduction:
You are part of a scientific research team. Your team will be researching and doing a report involving the states of
matter. Your report will answer the following: What is matter? What are the properties of a solid? What are the
properties of a gas? What are the properties of a liquid? Your report will be displayed in a table in order to organize
the information.
Procedures:

ACTIVITY
Prior to the computer
1. The teacher will distribute the scientific report worksheet.
2. The students will make a hypothesis for each of the scientific questions.
At the computer
1. Every student on their own laptop will research the information.
2. Once the student completes their report, they will create a chart in Microsoft Word to display the
information.
After the computer
1. Students will help the teacher fill out a chart on the board as a class. This allows any student to
gather any extra information that is necessary.
2. The scientific chart will be turned in.

● Closure: After the activity, students will write a paragraph (5-7 sentences) describing their hypotheses.
The students will then discuss if they were or were not correct and why.

ASSESSMENT EVIDENCE:
Students will submit and present their information table and their report worksheet. Each student’s table will
be graded based on the rubric below. The report worksheet will be graded based on completion.

MODIFICATIONS:

I am aware that modifications will be made for students who did not master the objectives and for those ready
for enrichment. However, modifications are not covered in this course and are not part of this particular lesson.
