Question 2
Read the following text. Then, answer questions (a) – (j).

Great white sharks can be found throughout the world’s oceans, mostly in cool waters close
to the coast. These super swimmers are the largest predatory fish on our planet. They grow
up to around 6.1m long. They are estimated to live as long as 70 years or more.
Great white sharks are grey with a white underbelly, from where they get their name. They
have a streamlined shape and powerful tails that propel them through the water at
over 60km per hour.
Any creature unlucky enough to find itself in the gob of a great white is in for a nasty
shock because this beast’s mouth is equipped with a set of 300 sharp, triangular
teeth arranged in up to seven rows. Whilst many think of them as fearsome man-eaters,
humans aren’t on the great white’s menu. Researchers believe that, rather than preying on
humans to eat them, the sharks are just taking a “sample bite” before swimming off. When
they are young, they feed on small prey such as fish and rays. However, when they are
older and bigger, they feast on sea mammals such as sea lions, seals and small whales.

Great white sharks have a strong sense of smell that they can detect a colony of seals two
miles away. If there was only one drop of blood in 100 litres of water, a great white would
smell it. These cunning creatures like to take their prey by surprise. They usually position
themselves underneath their unsuspecting victims before swimming up and…chomp! They
often burst out of the water in a leap before falling back in with their meal in their mouths.

A great white usually gives birth from two to ten pups. She does not care for her offspring
and may even try to eat them. Thus, the newborn pups are left to fend for themselves in the
ocean.

Great white sharks are at the top of the food chain and are unlikely to be killed by other sea
creatures. Sadly, however, they are under serious threat by human activity. Illegal hunting
of these beautiful beasts, and overfishing, has meant that today great white sharks are
an endangered species.

Question 3
Read the brochure below. Then, answer questions (a) – (i).

DENGUE FEVER
What is Dengue?
 It is a disease caused by the Aedes mosquito.
 It is found in tropical and sub-tropical regions around the world.

How is Dengue transmitted?

 The Dengue virus is transmitted to humans through bites of female Aedes mosquitoes.
 These mosquitoes acquire/get the virus while feeding on the blood of an infected
person.
 After 8-10 days of incubation, an infected mosquito can transmit the virus to humans.
 The lifespan of a mosquito is between 15 to 65 days and it will infect as many people
as it possibly can while it is still alive.

What are the signs?

 Dengue fever is a flu-like illness with high fever, headache, pain behind the eyes,
muscle and joint pains and rashes. It seldom causes death.
 Dengue haemorrhagic fever may cause death.

What can you do to prevent or control Dengue?

Make sure your house is free from Aedes mosquitoes by:
 Getting rid of containers, both man-made and natural, that can breed mosquitoes (man-
made containers include flower pot base plants, metal drums, plastic food containers,
tyres while natural containers include leaves and fruit shells); spraying insecticides in
the house to kill the hidden mosquitoes;
 using insecticide such as ABATE when storing water.

Remember: Prevention is better than cure!

Question 4
Read the article below.

Children of the past spent their time playing outdoor games or staying indoors, pursuing a
hobby or participating in activities such as carrom and monopoly. However, the
introduction of technology and computers has completely transformed the lives of children
today.
Many children are addicted to playing computer games instead of taking part in physical
activities that are beneficial and healthy. Sitting down for long hours in front of the
computer and snacking on junk food might lead to many disadvantages which include
health complications. Among these complications are obesity, sleep problems and chronic
diseases.
It is time something is done to prevent this situation from getting out of hand. Children
should be protected from becoming victims of a situation that may be beyond their
control. Parents and guardians must take the necessary steps to ensure that their children
grow up in a safe and healthy environment. One of the best ways is to encourage our
children to participate in outdoor activities. This could be swimming, playing tennis,
squash or even a team event like football, hockey or cricket.
There are many reasons why we should encourage children to be actively involved in
outdoor activities. Besides making them healthy and preventing chronic diseases, children
will have an excellent opportunity to make new friends. This will help children develop
social skills and racial tolerance. When participating in outdoor activities, children get the
opportunity to mix with other children who may not come from similar ethnic
backgrounds.
As outdoor activities are less structured, children are also able to let their hair down.
Moreover, taking part in outdoor activities is an effective way for them to keep fit. Last
but not least, children will develop self-esteem and a sense of confidence which will help
them survive in the real world.
