Linear Equations Summative Assessment Grading Worksheet

Student Name: Student A Grade: 30 out of 38 (78.95 %)

Each row corresponds to a question number (i.e. feedback written in row 1 is for question 1). If you have any
questions or concerns about your grade, please let me know.

Q# Feedback

6. You did not write and graph the equations of two perpendicular lines whose solution is the point (5, 10).
(-4 points)

You are correct that two graphs are perpendicular if their slopes are opposites and reciprocals of one
another.

We could start this problem by finding a line that goes through the point (5, 10).
● One example line would be y = x + 5 .

Once you find a line that goes through the point (5,10), use that line’s slope to find an opposite and
reciprocal slope.
● The slope of y = x + 5 is 1.
● The opposite and reciprocal of 1 is -1.
● This means that a line perpendicular to y = x + 5 must have slope -1.
● If our line is y = x + 5 , then a perpendicular line that also goes through the point (5, 10) would
be y = − x + 15 .

I only briefly summarized the process, so if you have any questions please come see me and I’ll be
happy to explain it further.

7. In your work, you forgot to add the additional 20 seconds Shawn had been walking (-2 points)

20. You were on the right track, but you made an arithmetic error (-2 points).

The two given equations were 5x − 9y = − 9, 3x + y = 0 .

From your work, I am assuming that you wanted to solve for y first.
You wrote down y = positive 3x, but it should really be y = negative 3x.

Kudos for still solving the system you wrote down correctly, but unfortunately I will still have to deduct
points because you solved the wrong system of equations.

Additional Comments

Hi Student A,

Overall, you did a great job.

You made errors that led you to the wrong answer, but I commend you for still being on the right track! In the
future, be more careful when reading the questions. Slow down and double check your work if you have the
time. If you are taking the test and you find a question confusing, please do not be hesitate to raise your
hand and ask for clarification! I’d be more than happy to assist you :).

Also, try to practice doing more problems similar to question 6. You have the general idea, but the only way
you’ll be able to nail this skill down is if you practice, practice, practice! Look back at the notes we did in
class and, if you would like, I can also give you additional practice problems. If you have any further
questions, let me know. I do not want you to get behind!

If you have any questions or concerns about your grade, please let me know.
