Learning Objective
The objective of the lesson is what students Number and Number Sense
will be able to do as they finish the activity.
For this objective, use the Standards of Focus: Place Value, Number Patterns, and Fraction Concepts
Learning (SOL) to say what you want to
focus on. 2.3 The student will
You can find the SOLs at a) identify the parts of a set and/or region that represent

activity will be. What will the students and
the teacher be doing? (This includes what
The objective of this lesson is to explore fractions and connect them

introduce the students briefly with a definition of what fractions are
and what they visually may look like. Students will then be able to
use this SMART Notebook lesson to solve problems pertaining to
various types of fractions. Each student will be able to participate to
gain further knowledge about these fractions. First, there will be a
picture of various types of food that can be distributed into
fractions, such as pies, pizza, etc. This connection of reality will
strengthen student’s ability to connect to the lesson. There will also
be different answers choices in the format of a fraction. These
fractions need to be matched to the correct picture. Students will
need to physically drag these numbers to the picture. In the next
“game”, there will be another visual of multiple fractions. Students
need to drag each one and repeat out loud what that fraction reads.
Students can take turns and rotate on who identifies these fractions.
The next option, students will see another visual, this time this
visual isn’t the typical shape of a pie or pizza (circle), it is a stick of
butter (rectangle). This switch of shape will let students know that
this too, can be distributed. Students will have one picture and a
various answer choices, they are only able to choose the correct one
and drag that fraction to match the picture. Students will also be
able to match fractions, again. Students will be shown a picture with
the labeled fraction, they must choose that correct match of a

fraction. Overall, these activities are matching. These matching

games give students the opportunity to successfully identify for
those hands-on and visual learners especially.
