COMPARATIVE STUDY OF AMPALAYA (Momordica Charantia) LEAVES AND

MALUNGGAY (Moring Oleifera) LEAVES EXTRACT AS GROWTH ACTIVATORS FOR

TOMATO SEED (Solanum Lycopersicom)

CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

Situation Analysis

One of the problems of Farmers are the expenses for the Growth Activators that they will

need to add to produce a better quality of their products especially the ones who does not

have a land of there own. Because of these scientist has created vegetables and fruits by

using GMO or genetically modified organisms which helps the community by creating a

faster and a bigger productions of food. GMO are also not good for us with the help of

scientific facts such as numerous health problems increased after GMOs were introduced

in 1996 and Genetic engineering creates dangerous side effects since it is not naturally

made(Breyer 2011). As the researcher, it will help the environment if Farmers are given

more than one alternative of Growth Activators to give out a natural production with faster

time and a bigger product which is given by 2 environmental, budget friendly and all year

round ingredients which are the Ampalaya leaves extract and Malunggay leaves extract

Ampalaya( Bitter Melon) with the scientific name of Momordica Charantia is widely known

for its vitamins and bitter taste which helps diabetics but never as a Growth Activator. It

has a high amount of vitamins and minerals especially Potassium, Phosphorus and

Calcium which are the basic ingredients for a Growth Activator. It is abundant and a cheap

alternative to every Growth Activator available commercially.Philippines is also one of the

largest consumers of bitter gourd tendrils, even though the plant is actually believed to be

native to India (2005). Ampalaya is almost the same as Malunggay in terms of its nutrients

and minerals and also with its availability especially in this country. Although Malunggay

already has a passed literature regarding as a Growth Activator which turned out

successful.

Tomato or Solanum Lycopersicom is a fruit that has a time bound regarding its growth

which helps with the researcher on time. A Tomato also needs the basic nutrients and

minerals of a growth activator which makes it a great candidate for this experiment. With a

fresh production, the community will be benefited in numerous ways such as abundant in

foods, a cheaper price, more alternative for a growth activator and a chemical free growth

activator. La Union will be the scope of this research which will be given its priority.

Statement of the Problem

This study aims to compare the effects of Ampalaya leaves and Malunggay

leaves extract as Growth Activator for Tomato seed. Specifically it seeks to answer the

following.

1. Compare the effectiveness of Ampalaya leaves and Malunggay leaves extract as

Growth Activator for Tomato seed in terms of.

a.) speed of germination of the tomato seed

b.) height if the tomato

c.) number of leaves

2. Determine the significant differences between the Ampalaya leaves and Malunggay

leaves extract as Growth Activator for Tomato seed in terms of.

a.) speed of germination of the tomato seed

b.) height if the tomato

c.) number of leaves

Hypotheses

This study aims to compare the effects of Ampalaya leaves and Malunggay

leaves extract as Growth Activator for Tomato seed. Specifically it seeks to answer the

following.

1.Ho= Ampalaya leaves and Malunggay leaves extract are not effective as a Growth

Activator for Tomato seed in terms of.

a.) speed of germination of the tomato seed

b.) height if the tomato

c.) number of leaves

2. Ho= there are no significant differences between Ampalaya leaves and Malunggay

leaves extract as growth activators for tomato seed in terms of.

a.) speed of germination of the tomato seed

b.) height if the tomato

c.) number of leaves

Scope and Delimitation

This study will be focusing on the objective which is the comparative study of

Ampalaya leaves and Malunggay leaves extract as Growth Activators for Tomato seed.

This experiment will be conducted at Dili Bauang La Union.

Moreover, this study has its limitation in which case there will only be 10 respondents

and they will be limit to Farmers only. We will be achieving this 10 respondents by random

sampling of Farmers specifically here in La Union and we will be using the process of

interview. This research will also limit itself in identifying the different nutrients that will not

be significant to this study specifically the different nutrients in a commercially available

fertilizer.

Significance of the Study

The researcher will provide two(2) alternative to the commercially available Growth

Activator found in the market, these are Environmental and Budget friendly which will help

the farmers especially the ones who are renting land to farm on. Farmers will be given a

chance to save for the long run not just because of the mere reason that it is budget

friendly but also because of the faster time growth with the use of Ampalaya leaves and

Malunggay leaves extract. The community will also be benefited by the time growth since

this will lead to more harvest which will also help lessen famine for food. Both alternative

are also chemical free which removes the idea of having any harmful chemicals on every

fruits and vegetables you will intake. The growth of the said plants will also be natural

since the only added products are natural. This will also help create a better outcome than

the Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO).

Definition of Terms

Ampalaya (Momordica charantia). also known as a bitter melon that is bitter, it is

commonly used to cure diabetics.

Germination. is the time the plant will grow.

Growth Activator. a type of fertilizer in which the main purpose of this is the growth of the

plant.
Height of the Tomato. to see the effects of both alternatives in terms of the height.

Malunggay (Moringa oleifera). is a vegetable plant in which even the leaves are edible,

widely know for its nutritional values for humans and plants.

Tomato (Solanum lycopersicom). a fruit that has a time bound for its normal time of

growth.
