Lesson Procedures

Introduction ( 5 min.):

Ask the students what we have been learning about for the past few weeks in socials (family)

Tell them that we are going to be switching gears and talking about our school community now.

Ask the students what they think a school community is and means.
Body ( 20 min.):

Begin with the SMART board lesson.

The students will be asked to come up when I draw their name from the name jar to answer questions on
the SMART board lesson.
 I will have questions that link school staff to their family members and ask the students how they
might be the same.

Explain the handout to the students.

 “On this handout you will think of someone who works in the school and draw a picture of them in
the box. You will also write who they are in this line here at the top. After you have drawn them
doing their job around the school, you will write about why you chose that person and how they
are a school helper.”
 When you are done everything, show me you are done and I will check it.
 When you are done, you may color your picture with PENCIL CRAYONS ONLY, and you can only
color when you are done everything else!

I will then ask the students to think of one person in the school who is staff. This could be anyone
and try to think of different people within the school so that everyone is not writing about the
same person. There is Mrs. Locke, Mr. Cunnings, Mrs. Reilings, Mrs. Brouwers, Mrs. Wolters, etc.

Ask the students to open their eyes when they think of someone and to come and get a handout
and begin working on it.

They will be given 20 minutes to work on this.

Closure (5 min.):

Ask the students to please hand in their work into the yellow social studies bin.

Ask the students to please clean up their area and join us on the carpet.

I will then ask if anyone would like to share who they wrote about and what they wrote for what that
person does to be a school helper.
