TRAINING REPORT ON REGENERATIVE HEALTH AND

NUTRITION FOR NUTRIION OFFICERS, HEALTH PROMOTION


FOCAL PERSONS AND MIDWIVES OR PHYSIOTHERAPISTS.

1ST to 3RD December, 2009.

INTRODUCTION:
The Ministry of Health has adopted the Regenerative health and
nutrition concept as a policy. This concept of Regenerative Health and
nutrition comes from the Hebrew Israelite community in Demona. This
concept proposes healthy lifestyle, health promotion and disease prevention
as health development paradigm for the country.

The Ministry of Health has been implementing this policy for the
last four years by way of capacity development and training, communication
and providing Regenerative Health and nutrition services to the people of
Ghana. The idea behind training is to produce and multiply the number of
“change agents” and advocates at the district and community level.

The central idea behind Regenerative Health and nutrition is that


through the implementation of healthy lifestyles, dietary practices and
mother and child care practices, we can eliminate many of the diseases
presently impacting upon the citizens of Ghana.

OPENING:
The three day workshop on Regenerative Health and nutrition was
opened by the program manager Mr. Kofi Adusei of Ministry of Health. In
his address, he mentioned that short lifespan has become a problem in our
society and thus, urge participants to take the training seriously, actively,
and fully participate so that they could become the “change agents” for their
respective districts and communities. He also stated that the Regenerative
Health and nutrition was now a focal point of its national policy and should
be taken seriously.
OBJECTIVES:
The objectives of the workshop were as follows.
1. To equip participants with skills that will enable them take actions in
matters related to physical exercise.
2. To educate participants on good nutrition and catering services.
3. To equip participants with the skills that will enable them to handle
maternal and child health problems.
4. To equip participants with the right information on healthy lifestyles
in society.

EXPECATION OF PARTICIPANTS
Some expected outcomes of the workshop by participants included the
following.
• To be able to tell the importance of water as medicine.
• To be able to tell the importance of exercise as medicine.
• To be able to tell the importance of plant based diet and how to
combine them to get a nutritiously balanced diet.
• To upgrade their skills in physical exercises
• To be able to impact the knowledge acquired to other
colleagues who could not benefit from the workshop.

METHODOLOGY:
The participatory method was used
• Reading
• Exercise (Group exercises)
• Discussions
• Demonstrations
• Practical
TRAINING:
In all, twenty two (22) sessions were treated for three days. These
included the following,

Day 1
1. Overview and introduction to mother and child health.
2. Prenatal care.
3. Health benefits of water.
4. Nutrients.
5. Concept of healthy lifestyle.
6. Maintaining health through good relationship.
7. Preparation of Soya products
Day 2
8. Personal and environmental hygiene and use of natural
products.
9. Preparing for labour and delivery.
10.Maintaining a healthy body weight
11.Maintaining health through relaxation.
12.Food groups in Ghana.
13.How to combine your foods and plan your meals.
14.How to use Soya for cooking variety of meals.
15.Physical exercise.
Day 3
16.Child health.
17. Care of the mother.
18.Maintaining personal hygiene, internal cleansing, and
environmental sanitation and keeping health.
19.Effects of clothing and cosmetics on health.
20.Feeding the family.
21.Special diet for special needs.
22.How to prepare local beverages.
DISCUSSIONS:

The policy on Regenerative Health and Nutrition was highlighted. It


was said that in Regenerative Health and nutrition, animal diet is not
included. Advantages of plant based diet were highlighted with emphasis on
fruits and vegetables. The benefits of water were mentioned and discussed.
Participants were taken through the principles of drinking water.
Dehydration was discussed and participants were also taken through signs
indicating dehydration. The food groups in Ghana were dealt with and also
the nutrients. Participants were taught on how to combine foods and plan
meals based on healthy combinations and adequate amounts of food groups
in the local environment.

Participants were given an overview on mother and child health.


Prenatal care was also discussed and with ideas on labour and delivery
mentioned as well. Participants were taught to maintain a healthy body
weight. They were also taught on how to take BMIs.

The concept of healthy lifestyle was discussed. Participants were


taught to have good relationships with other people as that could lead to
good health. They were also taught to have enough rest, stating that rest was
an important component of Regenerative Health and nutrition. Participants
were taken through on how to relax. The uses of natural products and their
effects on health were discussed. Personal and environmental hygiene were
not left out. Internal cleansing of the human body was discussed as well.

There were practical sessions in which participants were taught on


preparations of Soya products and local beverages. Participants were taken
through some physical exercises to qualify the saying ‘exercise is medicine’
under the Regenerative Health and nutrition concepts.
EVALUATION OF THE TRAINING PROGRAM

For the purpose of evaluating whether the trainees had gained


knowledge and skills from the training imparted to them, there was an open
forum in which participants were asked to tell what they had learnt from the
training and how they were going to disseminate that at their various
districts and community level.
On the topics treated by facilitators, 100% of participants said it was
good.

EDUCATIONAL ASPECTS:

Almost (100%) of participants said the training objectives were met.


About (98%) said the programme met their personal objectives.
More than ninety percent that is, (98%) said the training methods used
were good while the remaining two percent (2%) said the teaching method
were fair.

RELEVANT TO WORK:

All the seventy nine (79) participants said the content of the training was
relevant to their present profession.

SOCIAL ASPECT / ADMINISTRATION:


Majority, (80%) acknowledged that, the reception on arrival was good
whiles 20% said it was fair.
Almost 100% of the participants said the conference room was spacious
enough.
CLOSING:
The Deputy Director of Health Administration and Support Services
(HASS) in the person of Mr. K. DUA OYINKA who closed the workshop
emphasized on the need to share knowledge acquired with other colleagues
as they go back to their districts. He emphasized on the importance of the
Regenerative Health and nutrition and that it was good participants
embraced it fully.

He further said he was pleased with participants for taken the training
serious and their level of understanding they demonstrated. In his remarks he
stated that money should not be the only reason for not doing things like the
Regenerative Health and Nutrition. He added that participants should try and
lead in their communities by example to help make the regenerative health
and nutrition a reality.

He also urged participants to set up Regenerative Health and nutrition


restaurants in the region. He was pleased with the organization and thanked
participants, local and National facilitators for a good work done.

CONCLUSION:

The training programme ended successfully with the participants sure of


going back to implement the knowledge and skills acquired in their
respective Districts and communities.
