ABSTRACT

Background: Acne vulgaris (AV) is a common follicular disorder that affects the
Pilosebacea follicle in the form of chronic inflammation with multifactorial causes
and clinical manifestations of blackheads, papules, pustules, nodes and cysts.
Obesity is an excessive accumulation of fat causing weight gain exceed the limits
of skeletal requirement. Increased androgen production in obese people will
stimulate the activity of sebaceous glands to produce more sebum and stimulate the
formation of blackheads. The purpose of this study is to find the relationship
between obesity and incidency of acne vulgaris in preclinical medical students in
Medical and Health Sciences Faculty of Jambi University in 2017.
Method: The method used is observational analytic with cross sectional approach.
Samples were taken randomly and IMT calculations were performed based on the
Asia Pacific criteria and the examination of acne vulgaris by general practitioners
and determined gradation of acne vulgaris based on Lehman classification.
Results: From 84 study samples, 75% had acne vulgaris and 25% had no acne
vulgaris. Where 42, 9% had moderate acne vulgaris, 27.4% had mild acne vulgaris
and 4.8% had severe acne vulgaris. Women dominate the case of Akne vulgaris
with 42,8%. 58.3% of the samples were not obese. Chi-square test results shown p-
value <0.05 which means there is a relationship between obesity and incidency of
acne vulgaris in preclinical medical students in Medical and Health Sciences
Faculty of Jambi University in 2017.
Conclusion: There is a significant association between obesity and acne vulgaris
occurrence.
