Assignment No.2 Due Date: 1-10-2015

Question 1: Three phase elements may either be connected in Δ or star configurations. The Δ
and Y connected circuits, their phase voltages, phase currents, line voltages, line currents and
impedances are shown in the figure P-1.

Question 2: Find the symmetrical components of line currents and delta currents of a delta
connected resistive load connected with a balanced three-phase supply shown in figure P-2.

Question 3: Draw positive sequence, negative sequence and zero sequence network of the
system shown in figure P-4 whose parameters are as follow
Generator 1: 30MVA, 11kV, X” = 0.2, X2 = 0.15, X0 = 0.03 (Values are in PU)
Generator 2: 10MVA, 11kV, X” = 0.2, X2 = 0.15, X0 = 0.05 (Values are in PU)
Motor 3: 25MVA, 11kV, X” = 0.2, X2 = 0.2, X0 = 0.1 (Values are in PU)
Transformers:
1. 20MVA, 11/120Y kV, X = 10%
2. 11.5MVA, 120/11Y kV, X = 10%
3. 8MVA, 120Y/11 kV, X = 10%
Select 30MVA and 11kV as base values. For each line, 250% of positive sequence reactance is
zero sequence reactance.

Problem 4: One line diagram of three-bus power system is as follows:

Figure P-4
Each generator is represented by an EMF behind its transient reactance. 100MVA is set as the
base value and all impedances are expressed in per unit value. Fault impedance is j0.1pu and
neutral of each generator is grounded through a current limiting reactor of 0.25/3 per unit on
100MVA base. Assume all three positive zero and negative sequence impedances are same .

a) Using the method of Symmetrical components, calculate fault currents and fault voltages,
when single line to ground fault occurs at BUS 2.
b) Using the method of Symmetrical components, calculate fault currents and fault voltages,
when double line to ground fault occurs at BUS 1.
Question 5: Compute phase voltages and currents for a Line to Line fault at BUS C. Fault
impedance is 2ohms between phase b and c.

Question 6: A sub transmission system where a 13.8kV generator is stepped up to 138kV and
voltage is again stepped down to 13.8kV at consumer end is shown in figure P-6. This second
generator is in synchronism with the supply system. There is a 10,000HP motor attached to the
Bus B and a line to ground fault occurs at this bus. You are required to calculate the fault current
distribution of the whole system, also the fault voltages. System Specifications are given in the
table below:
You can ignore the resistance of the system component in your calculations.
