Dear Dr. Bruce,

As an English major, I took this course to learn a useful skill that will hopefully open up
future career options. It came as a surprise to me, however, when the lessons in this class
reminded me of the basic, but fundamental writing principles I have learned throughout my
schooling. This semester, I have achieved the course’s student learning outcomes (SLO’s) of
rhetorical focus (SLO 1), ethical research (SLO 2), persuasion (SLO 3), organization (SLO 4),
language and design (SLO 5), and collaboration (SLO 6). To showcase my proficiency and
improvements in these areas, I have created a portfolio that includes my resume, group charter,
and a peer review.

The first assignment that I have included in this portfolio is my resume, which satisfies
several SLO’s. By tailoring my educational and professional accomplishments to more
effectively reflect my suitability for the position, I establish my ability to narrow my focus for
the intended audience while also exhibiting a distinct understanding of purpose by including
specific examples of my editing experience in order to persuade Dr. Bruce to select me for the
job (SLO’s 1 and 3). Additionally, I rearranged the sections in a clear and logical way by moving
my education to the top, above my professional experience, to concisely convey the information
without using exclusive or offensive terminology (SLO’s 4 and 5). Finally, using succinct
statements and proper use of white space to aid in readability, my resume exemplifies my
comprehension of design principles (SLO 5).

The second document in this portfolio is a team charter created in collaboration with my
iFixit group. We created this charter to outline our expectations of each group member and
establish a strategy for conflict resolution and a disciplinary action plan if a resolution could not
be agreed upon. In order to implement efficient and practical conflict resolution techniques, we
searched for and ethically cited (SLO 2) relevant articles written by an experienced project
manager and the longtime CEO of Marco Technologies, LLC (Fey 2018, “Jeff Gau,” n.d.). This
document was formally addressed to Dr. Bruce in memo format as proof of our ability to work
together as a team and mediate our differences in a productive way (SLO’s 1 and 6).
My portfolio’s final document is a peer review which was conducted by my teammates
and myself on another team’s charter with the purpose of advising them on their successes and
any improvements that could be made (SLO 1). Because this document is an informal review
meant to assist my peers, it aptly illustrates my ability to write for a variety of audiences while
remaining unbiased (SLO’s 1 and 5). Furthermore, in this review, we suggest that team Trifecta
elaborate on their “expectations” section so their members can follow them successfully, which
displays my collaboration skills (SLO 6).

Reflecting on this course, I feel that I have refamiliarized myself with valuable writing
techniques and improved my writing capabilities vastly, and I hope the portfolio that I have
compiled effectively showcases my accomplishments.

Sincerely,

Haleigh St. Paul
