track one: calling all organizational careers
This track is for students interested in learning about and/or pursuing a professional
career working for corporations. The endless job opportunities for a PR professional are just
waiting to be explored. . With such a wide variety of careers available, however, it can be
intimidating to know what to pursue. This track strives to dig deeper into four different
professional career options for students looking for jobs in an office-setting.

Session One
• Write, Revise, Repeat: Public Relations Writer & Communication Specialist
A career as a Public Relations Writer and Communications Specialist will appeal
to those who have a love for writing. Formulating PR plans and strategies,
building the company’s brand and reputation with its publics through online and
offline channels, as well as managing media relations are just a few of the main
aspects a PR writing and Communication Specialist career entails. This session

Speaker: Nicole Keiner
Location: Boyer Atrium

Session Two
• Caution! Crisis Ahead: Best Practices in Crisis Communication & Media Relations
Crisis Communication and Media Relations is more serious, yet highly important
within Public Relations. This field involves mediating messages and handling
various audiences at moments of heightened pressure. During times of crisis,
managing media inquiries and taking proactive approaches to communicate with
the public are crucial for protecting the reputation of an organization. This session
will explore best practices, also known as “the do’s and don’ts,” when handling
crises and the media.
Speaker: John Reynolds
Location: Boyer Atrium

Session Three
• A Heart for People & An Eye for Detail: Professional Career in Event Planning
Public Relations students who love people and have attention to detail may find
their calling as professional event planners. A fun job that keeps you on the move,
individuals who do not wish to sit in an office will love exploring this career
option. Event planners get to plan and attend events of all kind, but there is much
more to event planning than most realize. This session delves into the world of
event planning and meticulous details that go into it.
Speaker: Molly Unangst
Location: Boyer Atrium
Session Four
• Social Media: The New Necessity in Public Relations
The use and impact of social media marketing has drastically increased in recent
years. In these modern times, the water is muddied, and various areas of public
relations and social media marketing have become intertwined. Social media, with
its real-time messaging, allows individuals to communicate in seconds,
amplifying conversations and messages. This can be both good and bad. This
session explores the important role social media plays in public relations today.
Speaker: Katelyn Becker
Location: Boyer Atrium

track two: freelance forward

This track is for students interested in learning about and/or pursuing a professional
career as a freelancer. For those who do not wish to work in an office-setting, freelancing is a
perfect solution. Work from the comfort of your home, while doing the job you love! Most
Public Relations students do not know freelancing is an option, and if they do, students often
have no idea how to even begin becoming their own freelancer. As a result, this session will
focus on everything students need to know about freelancing, from the basics, to tips and tricks
for “getting on their feet.”

Session One
• Be the Boss: Pros and Cons of Freelancing
Students who appreciate flexibility and less structure will love exploring the
option of freelancing in this session. Being your own boss means sleeping in (if
you want,) saving time by eliminating long work commutes, and bringing the
office to you. Students who wish to work at home and make their own schedule
will love exploring the various pros and cons to freelancing.
Speaker: Karen Hendricks
Location: Frey 110

Session Two
• Freelancing 101: The Basics and Getting Started
Breaking into the world of freelancing can be intimidating and difficult. You may
find yourself asking, “How do I go about starting my own mini-business? And
what about finding clients?” This session focuses on how to break into the world
of freelancing. The sessions will also provide students with insider tips and tricks
for getting started and gaining clients.
Speaker: Stephanie Shirley
Location: Frey 110

Session Three
• Beyond the Appeal & Comfort: What Every Potential Freelancer Should Know
Although freelancing allows you to create your own schedule and work from the
comfort of home, a self-employed freelancer owns their own business. This
means you must be your own boss, both determined and disciplined. This session
will dig into stereotypes of freelancing and the true nature of its work.
Speaker: Leslie Amorós
Location: Frey 110

Session Four
• Freelance Writing and Publications
Writing is a larger part of public relations today, whether it be brochures,
infographics, websites, press releases, or cover stories in a magazine. Public
relations writing and publications are necessary for a company to build and
establish a strong brand. Cover stories effectively spread the word about a specific
company. This session will explore the world of freelance PR writing and
publications, taking a look into Passante’s personal experiences.
Speaker: Robyn Passante
Location: Frey 110
going pro: embrace the possibilities
keynote presentations
*Below are excerpts from the opening and closing keynote presentations that serve as all-
encompassing decryptions*

Opening Session by Quinn Bryner

Title: Embrace Your Possibilities. The Future Lies Ahead.
Imagine that you have no limitations on what you can be, have, or do in life. Close your
eyes for a moment and imagine that you have all the time, money, education, experience,
contacts, and resources to achieve anything you want in life. If everything you needed was in
front of you, what career would you choose? What kind of a life would you want to create for
yourself? Now is the time to create a vision for yourself for the long-term future. Embrace all
possibilities with open arms. A narrow mindset negatively effects our work and keeps us from
reaching our full potential. Always. Never. Have to. Can’t. These words seem harmless enough,
but if you’re not careful these words and others like them can keep you stuck inside the box. The
possibilities are endless as a public relations professional by thinking outside the box and
exploring options with an open mind. Now is the time to explore all your options while you can.
Closing Session by Linda Burkley

Dream Big:
It is important to dream big and not limit yourself. Dare to dream big. Dare to dream
outside of the box, then go after your dreams. Whatever struggles you’re facing in your life
today, whatever confusion you’re feeling, do not let it make you crumble. You are smart,
capable, and here right now for a reason. Attending this conference means you care. Attending
this conference means you were curious about your career options and future. Keep that curiosity
alive and do not give up. You’re probably wondering, “But how am I ever supposed to achieve
my dreams when I’m so far in debt?” or “Where will I ever find the money, time, or connections
to accomplish what I truly want in life?” Daring to dream big is a lifestyle of wildly pursuing
what we want in life, especially when we’re scared. Anything is possible with hard work,
determination, perseverance and belief in oneself. Know and believe this, and you will have the
career you want.
