1.0 Introduction

According to our module Community Service Initiative (CSI), we are required to

organize a voluntary event, which are either organizing a visit to orphanage homes or street
feeding. Both activities intend to create a community of students to be more responsible,
sensitive and knowledgeable about the community and their needs.

After discussing among the group members, we had decided to organize a visit to
orphanage homes, named Rumah K.I.D.S. This homes is located at Subang Jaya, Selangor,
which is about 15 minutes of driving distances from Taylor’s University. After several
meetings, our commander, Teoh had set a date of the visit, which is on 14th October 2018.
This event takes about half day which is from 12:30pm to 5:30pm.

We had visited the homes before the event day in order to oversee their living
conditions and identify what are their current needs. After understanding their current
situations, we start to develop plan and assign jobs to each of the members for the
preparation of the upcoming visit. The preparation of the event had took about 2 months.
Every member was cooperative and responsible in performing their jobs according to the
orders of the commander. On the event day, we had done a perfect job in making the event
success and the kids truly enjoyed the activities that we had planned.

This journal will give more detailed information about the overall process from the
preparation to the event day. It will describe further about the preparations and activities
that I have involved and will also express my own opinions and feelings about the visit.
2.0 Brief Introduction of the Orphanage Homes

Rumah K.I.D.S are founded in 1991, reaching out to abused, orphaned and
abandoned children. The children are introduced to a new family to develop friendships in
a loving environment under the guidance of house parents. Through the last 26 years,
Rumah K.I.D.S has housed, fed and nurtured over 800 children.

Rumah K.I.D.S has two branches, which are located at Subang Jaya and Klang,
Selangor. We had visited one of their branches at Subang Jaya which is located just 15
minutes of driving distances from Taylor’s University. This homes consists of 24 children,
age ranging from 4 to 17 years old. The children are taking care by an Indian family, which
the owner of this homes is called Mr. Eric. He is a kind and responsible man who has
educated their children to be in good manner and friendly whenever people visit their
homes. He always welcome the kind-hearted outsiders to have a visit, bringing some good
values to the children.

Rumah K.I.D.S hopes that the children can grow up in a safe and loving
environment, completing their education and are empowered to lead productive lives in the
community.

After our commander, Teoh Zi Wei set the date of the event, each of the members
was assigned to the particular roles for the preparation of the upcoming visit. I was assigned
to the program team which is to arrange the program flow of the whole event. I worked
with my team member, Tey Cheng Fern to come out with an appropriate event flow in
order to ensure all the activities would be running smoothly on that particular day. We had
planned and scheduled the flow multiple times in order to suit the time required by the
first-aid section, comedy section, game section as well as the activities for the kids below
8 years old. The event flow has been shown as the figure 1.

Besides that, several members and I had assigned to perform the first-aid session.
The purpose of first-aid session is to provide the children some basic knowledge on how
to taking care of themselves or provide assistance when there is emergency happening
around them. We had designed an A3 board with some interesting illustrations and simple
words for them to understand easily. It took about 2 days to complete the board. The A3
boards has been shown in the figure 2. Before we went for the visit, we had gone through
a demonstration for the first-aid session in order to ensure that everything was well-
prepared.

session before the event day

Those are the preparations that I had made during pre-event weeks. The whole
preparation took me about 2 weeks. I enjoyed to work for this event due to it is an event
that benefits the children and the community.
6.0 Event Day

On the event day, we reached Rumah K.I.D.S at 12:30pm and started to run our
activities following the planned schedule. Every members had assigned to each particular
kid, so that the members can integrate with the children and take care of them throughout
the event. I was assigned to a 9-year-old kid, named Emmanuel. He is very talkative and
friendly. We get to know each other better after communicating with him.

After ice breaking session, my members and I started to set up for the first-aid
session. We gathered them around to ensure they were able to hear what we were going to
present. As what we had demonstrated before the event day, we had perform our job
successfully. The kids seemed to be enjoyed and gained knowledge from this session.

The next session was comedy session. The comedy consists of 5 different scenes,
presenting the roles and responsibilities of different careers and the professionalism. I had
perform a small character in this performance.

Right after the comedy, we were gathered around to proceed our ambitious board
session. This session allowed every children to write down their long-term and short-term
life goals as well as their ambitions on a piece of paper and paste it on the black board. I
assisted Emmanuel to write down his goals and ambition. His ambition was to become a
police to save the world. After that, we pasted it on the ambitious board and passed the
board to their house parents, so that they could view the notes that they had written and
always motivate themselves to work hard in order to pursue their dreams.

Emmanuel during the game session.

After the game session, our event was coming to the end. We were gathered in front
of the homes in order to take a group photo. We truly appreciated Mr. Eric for welcoming
our visit. The children were shaking hands with us before we were leaving. It was indeed
a meaningful event for me and I hope that one day I could contribute my efforts to the
community again.

7.0 Reflection

During the event, I have learned several new values from the children. The children
seem to be optimism with their current lives and willing to talk and integrate with every
visitors no matter where they come and how they look like. When visitor wants to leave,
each of the children will shake hands with the visitor to indicate their appreciation for their
comings. Besides, they are independent and discipline. They arranged our shoes and put
them on the shoes rack when we reached. This action had truly impressed me. Everyday
they will take turn to perform household duties in order to reduce the burdens of their house
parents. I found that they are much more mature and independent than the other kids or
even an adult. Thus, I really learned a lot from them throughout this event. In addition, I
am happy to work with my teammates as they are really helpful and friendly. I hope one
day we can visit Rumah K.I.D.S again in the future and bring more happiness to the kids.
